Low-Emission Office Chairs and Solid Wood Desks (UK Guide)

Early researchLast reviewed By the Longer Living Guide editorial team

Quick answer

Evidence here is thin, so focus on what is checkable: chairs with an independent emissions certificate (GREENGUARD, SCS Indoor Advantage, Nordic Swan) and as little foam as possible, and desks with solid wood or steel tops rather than chipboard or MDF. Our top chair is the HÅG Capisco; the Tikamoon Arto is our solid oak desk pick.

HÅG (Flokk)

Strong research
  • • Nordic Swan Ecolabel (per maker factsheet)
  • • GREENGUARD certified (per maker factsheet)

Honest caveat: Standard foam is not combustion-modified; Flokk says CMHR foam must be specified for domestic use, and that foam usually relies on flame retardants. Check which version you are buying and that the certificate covers your configuration. Price varies by fabric.

Strong research
  • • SCS Indoor Advantage Gold
  • • Mesh seat and back, foam only in arm pads

Honest caveat: The arm pads are polyurethane foam. The certificate tests emissions, not flame retardant content. It is expensive, though it carries a long warranty.

  • • Knit-covered plastic back
  • • Foam seat

Honest caveat: We could not confirm an emissions certificate for this UK model on the product pages, so ask the dealer for one. The seat is foam. The linked listing is the Office Edition (fire-tested for workplaces); Hunts also sells Home Editions tested for domestic rules, which is what UK law expects for furniture supplied for home use, so ask for that version.

Evidence check: We found no studies comparing office chairs or desks with health outcomes, so this is a guide built on material choices and certificates, not on proof of benefit. What is known: polyurethane foam in seating is a source of flame retardants in dust, and board desktops release formaldehyde when new.

Why are office chairs different from sofas?

In the UK, the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 apply to upholstered furniture supplied for domestic use (summary of scope). Office or "contract" chairs sold for workplaces are tested to separate commercial fire standards instead. That has two consequences for home workers:

  • A chair sold as an office edition may use standard foam. Some makers say that for home use you must order a domestic version with combustion-modified (CMHR) foam. Flokk's Capisco factsheet says exactly that, and UK dealer Hunts Office sells Steelcase chairs in Office and Home Editions.
  • CMHR foam and domestic fire tests often rely on flame retardants, so the domestic version may contain more of them. Legally, a chair for home use should meet the domestic rules; we are not suggesting you avoid them. The practical way to reduce foam chemicals is to choose a chair with less foam, such as a mesh seat and back.

How we chose

For chairs we gave most weight to an independent emissions certificate on the finished chair and to how much foam it contains. For desks we required a solid wood top rather than chipboard, MDF or laminate. We checked UK product pages for materials, finish and price. We could not find independent emission data for most mid-range chairs, so we grade them Early and say so. No brand paid to be included.

The chairs

HÅG Capisco 8106: best certified chair

Flokk lists Nordic Swan Ecolabel and GREENGUARD certificates for the Capisco. Nordic Swan's furniture criteria also ban halogenated flame retardants and fluorinated substances (Nordic Ecolabelling). The saddle seat encourages changing position, and wool-rich fabrics are available. Caveat: for domestic use Flokk says CMHR foam must be specified; ask how that affects the certificate. Prices at UK dealers vary by fabric.

Herman Miller Aeron: least foam

The seat and back are elastomeric mesh, so the only foam is in the arm pads, and Herman Miller says the Aeron holds SCS Indoor Advantage Gold, an independent low-VOC emissions certification. Caveat: at £1,219 it is expensive, and the certificate covers emissions, not flame retardant content.

Steelcase Series 2 3D Microknit: mid-price option

A knit-covered plastic back in place of a foam backrest, at about half the Aeron's price (£617.14 inc VAT on sale at Hunts Office). Caveat: we could not confirm an emissions certificate for this model on UK pages, so ask the dealer; the seat is foam, and for home use ask for the Home Edition, which is tested to domestic fire rules.

IKEA MARKUS: budget option

IKEA publishes a full material list: mesh back, polyurethane foam seat, steel frame and a fabric that includes modacrylic, a fibre used for its fire resistance. Caveat: no emissions certificate, a glued veneer seat frame and a foam seat, so air it for a week before daily use.

The desks

Tikamoon Arto Solid Oak Desk: best solid wood desk

FSC solid oak with rubberwood, oiled, with "0% composite materials". Two drawers, 120 x 50 cm. Caveat: small for a two-screen set-up and no emissions certificate; the oil is not named.

Jarvis Hardwood Standing Desk: best sit-stand desk

Sold by Herman Miller UK with a solid European oak or walnut top on a motorised steel frame. Most standing desks use chipboard or MDF tops, so this removes the largest board panel in a home office. Caveat: the "wear-resistant topcoat" is not named and it costs £1,350. A bamboo version (£760) is cheaper, but bamboo boards are glued strips, so ask about the adhesive.

What to avoid or check

  • Bonded leather and PU "leather" gaming chairs with thick foam and strong smells.
  • Laminated chipboard desktops in small, closed rooms, especially when new.
  • Chairs with no material list. If the seller cannot tell you the foam type, fabric and whether flame retardants are used, choose another.
  • Home use of office-only chairs without checking whether a domestic version is required.

Simple steps that help more than the chair

  1. Ventilate the home office, especially in the first weeks of new furniture (NICE NG149).
  2. Damp-dust and vacuum with a HEPA vacuum weekly; flame retardants collect in dust.
  3. Wash hands before eating at your desk.
  4. Seal or edge-band any raw MDF edges on existing desks with a water-based product.

For the wider science on board furniture see our formaldehyde in furniture guide, and for labels see low-emission furniture labels. Sofas are covered in our non-toxic sofa guide.

Bottom line

The evidence base is thin, so buy on what you can check. For a chair, look for an emissions certificate on the finished product and as little foam as possible; the Capisco and Aeron are the best documented. For a desk, a solid wood or steel top beats chipboard. Then ventilate and keep dust down.

Frequently asked questions

Do office chairs contain flame retardants?

+

Many do, mainly in polyurethane foam. A UK study found classrooms with the most foam chairs had the highest levels of two organophosphate flame retardants in dust. Chairs with mesh seats and backs contain less foam. Ask the maker which foam and fabric treatments are used.

Do UK furniture fire rules apply to office chairs?

+

The 1988 Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations cover upholstered furniture supplied for domestic use. Chairs sold for offices are usually tested to commercial fire standards instead. Some makers say a domestic version with combustion-modified foam must be ordered for home use.

Is a GREENGUARD office chair worth it?

+

GREENGUARD and similar certificates are the best available proof that a chair releases few VOCs. They do not test flame retardant content, and no study shows health benefits from certified chairs. They are most worthwhile if you sit for long hours in a small room.

Are bamboo desks low-emission?

+

Bamboo desktops are made from strips glued together, so emissions depend on the adhesive. Ask whether the board meets CARB Phase 2 or TSCA Title VI, or is labelled no added formaldehyde. A solid hardwood top avoids most of that glue.

How long should I air a new office chair?

+

Unbox it in a ventilated room and keep windows open for at least a week, longer if it has a strong smell. Most VOCs from foam and plastics fall within a few weeks, though flame retardants persist and settle in dust.

Is a mesh chair better than a foam chair?

+

A mesh seat and back contain far less foam, which lowers one source of flame retardants and VOCs. Comfort and posture support matter too, so try before you buy. No study has measured health benefits of mesh over foam chairs.
