Low-Emission Furniture UK: Greenguard Gold, Solid Wood and Other Labels
Quick answer
Few furniture pieces sold in the UK carry GREENGUARD Gold, so the practical route is solid wood with an oil, wax or water-based finish, plus certified pieces where you can find them. GREENGUARD, Nordic Swan, Blue Angel and EU Ecolabel test or limit emissions. FSC is about forests, not air quality. Ventilate any new furniture.
Our picks
HÅG Capisco 8106 Office Chair
HÅG (Flokk)
- • Nordic Swan Ecolabel (per maker factsheet)
- • GREENGUARD certified (per maker factsheet)
Honest caveat: Standard foam is not combustion-modified; Flokk says CMHR foam must be specified for domestic use, and that foam usually relies on flame retardants. Check which version you are buying and that the certificate covers your configuration. Price varies by fabric.

Tikamoon Eden Solid Oak Dining Table (4 to 6 seats)
Tikamoon
- • Solid oak, 0% composite materials
- • Oiled finish
Honest caveat: Tikamoon does not publish an emissions test or name the oil used. Oiled tops need re-oiling and mark more easily than lacquer. Delivery is from France and costs extra.

IKEA IVAR Shelving Unit, Pine, 80x30x83 cm
IKEA
- • Side units and shelves: solid pine
- • Sold untreated (no factory finish)
Honest caveat: Untreated pine marks and stains easily. If you finish it, the finish you choose decides the emissions, so pick a water-based or natural oil product and air the room. There is no product-level emissions test for this unit.

IKEA RAST Chest of 3 Drawers, Pine
IKEA
- • Solid pine top, sides and drawer fronts
- • Fibreboard back and drawer bottoms
Honest caveat: The back panel and drawer bottoms are fibreboard, which is made with resin binders, so this is not board-free. It is untreated, so stains show. Anchor it to the wall, especially in a child’s room.

Tikamoon Arto Solid Oak Desk
Tikamoon
- • Solid oak with rubberwood parts
- • 0% composite materials
Honest caveat: No emissions certificate is published and the oil is not named. It is 120 x 50 cm, so it is small for a dual-monitor set-up. Delivery takes up to six weeks.

ercol Windsor Dining Chair
ercol
- • Solid elm and beech
- • No foam or upholstery
Honest caveat: Heal’s lists it in a range of finishes but does not say which are lacquer and which are oil, so ask before ordering. It is a premium price for one chair.

Heal’s Agnes Medium Shelving Unit
Heal's
- • Solid oak or walnut
- • Clear matt lacquer

Most furniture emissions come from two things: the glues in board (MDF, chipboard, plywood) and the finish on the surface. Our formaldehyde in furniture guide explains the science and the new EU limit. This guide is about buying: which labels mean something, and which UK-available pieces we would shortlist.

Which furniture labels actually test emissions?
| Label | What it checks | Tests the finished item? | How common in UK shops |
|---|---|---|---|
| UL GREENGUARD Gold | Emissions of 360+ VOCs and total chemicals, CDPH method | Yes, chamber test | Mostly office and nursery brands |
| UL GREENGUARD (standard) | VOC emissions, BIFMA X7.1 | Yes, looser limits | Office brands |
| Nordic Swan Ecolabel | Formaldehyde and VOC limits for boards, glues, padding; bans halogenated flame retardants and PFAS | Partly, via component tests | Scandinavian brands |
| Blue Angel DE-UZ 38 | Formaldehyde and VOC emissions from wooden furniture and slatted bases | Yes | Rare in the UK |
| EU Ecolabel | Hazardous substance limits, board emissions below E1 | Partly | Rare in the UK |
| SCS Indoor Advantage Gold | VOC emissions | Yes | Some office chairs |
| FSC | Responsible forestry | No emissions test | Very common |
| E1, E0.5, CARB2 | Formaldehyde from the board | Board only, often self-declared | Common on board furniture |
FSC deserves a special note. It is a good forestry label, and several of our picks carry it, but an FSC chipboard wardrobe can emit as much formaldehyde as any other chipboard wardrobe.
How we chose
We gave the most weight to pieces where either the finished item holds an independent emissions certificate (Strong) or the retailer lists every structural part as solid wood with a stated finish (Promising). We checked each UK product page for hidden board (backs, drawer bottoms, slats), finish type and price, and we left out pieces described only as "solid wood effect", veneered or "engineered". Picks span £49 to £1,287 and six brands. No brand paid to be included.
The picks
HÅG Capisco 8106 Office Chair: best certified option
One of the few pieces of furniture sold in the UK where the maker lists both a Nordic Swan Ecolabel and a GREENGUARD certificate. The saddle seat suits people who like to perch or shift position. Caveat: Flokk says combustion-modified (CMHR) foam must be specified for domestic use, and that foam usually relies on flame retardants; confirm the certificate covers the version you buy.
Tikamoon Eden Solid Oak Dining Table: best dining table
FSC solid oak, an oiled finish and, in Tikamoon's words, "0% composite materials". At £699 for a 150 cm table it is good value for genuinely solid furniture. Caveat: no emissions test is published and the oil is not named, so air it for a week or two after delivery.
IKEA IVAR Shelving Unit, Pine: best budget shelving
Solid pine sides and shelves, sold untreated, with a galvanised steel brace. It is cheap, modular and can be finished however you like. Caveat: untreated pine marks easily; if you oil or paint it, choose a water-based or natural oil product.
IKEA RAST Chest of 3 Drawers: best budget storage
At £49 RAST is mostly solid pine and arrives untreated. Caveat: the back panel and drawer bottoms are fibreboard, so it is not board-free, and it must be anchored to the wall.
Tikamoon Arto Solid Oak Desk: best desk
Solid FSC oak with rubberwood parts, an oiled finish and no composite board, in a compact 120 x 50 cm size. Caveat: small for two monitors and there is no emissions certificate. For sit-stand desks and chairs, see our office chair and desk guide.
ercol Windsor Dining Chair: best dining chair
Made in Buckinghamshire from solid elm and beech, with no foam or upholstery, so no foam flame retardants. ercol chairs last decades and are easy to re-finish. Caveat: Heal's lists several finishes without saying which are lacquer and which are oil, so ask.
Heal's Agnes Medium Shelving Unit: premium shelving
Solid oak or walnut with seamless joinery. A good choice where you want a hard-wearing surface without veneered board. Caveat: it is coated in a clear matt lacquer of unstated type, so unpack it somewhere ventilated.
What to avoid or check
- "Solid wood effect", "oak finish" or "engineered wood". These usually mean board with a printed or veneered surface.
- Hidden board. Backs, drawer bottoms and bed slats are often fibreboard or glued veneer even on "solid" pieces. Read the part-by-part material list.
- Solvent-heavy lacquers and stains. Oil, wax, water-based lacquer or untreated wood are lower-emitting options. Ask what the finish is.
- Unknown imports. HSE notes it has no data on where imported furniture's boards come from, while Great Britain has not adopted the EU's 2026 limit (see our formaldehyde guide).
- Upholstery. Sofas and mattresses add foam and flame retardants. See our non-toxic sofa guide and non-toxic mattress guide.
What the evidence says
Chamber studies show board furniture emits formaldehyde for months, with other VOCs falling faster (Brown, 1999). HSE's 2026 report links new particleboard furniture with higher levels in GB and German homes. Emission certificates such as GREENGUARD Gold give the strongest product-level assurance, but there is no trial showing that buying certified furniture improves health outcomes. Choosing solid wood is a sound way to lower a known source, rather than a proven health intervention.
How to check a piece before you buy
- Read the material list part by part. IKEA, Tikamoon and many others list top, sides, back and drawer bottoms separately.
- Search the certificate. For GREENGUARD, ask for the certificate number and check it on UL's database; for Nordic Swan, check the licence holder and product.
- Ask about the finish. "Oiled", "waxed" or "water-based lacquer" is a good answer; "lacquered" alone is not enough.
- Ask where the board was made, if there is any. EU-made board for the EU market must meet the 0.062 mg/m³ limit from August 2026.
- Plan the delivery. Unpack in a ventilated room and keep new pieces out of bedrooms for the first week or two if you can.
Second-hand and vintage
Older furniture has done most of its off-gassing, and solid wood pieces from the second-hand market are often the lowest-emission and lowest-cost option. Check for flaking old paint (which may contain lead) and avoid re-finishing indoors with solvent products.
Bottom line
You do not need a certificate on every piece. Put your money into solid wood for the biggest items in the rooms you use most, check backs and drawer bottoms for hidden board, prefer oil, wax or water-based finishes, and treat GREENGUARD Gold, Nordic Swan and Blue Angel as the labels that actually check emissions. FSC is for forests, not air.
Frequently asked questions
Is there GREENGUARD Gold furniture in the UK?
+
Yes, but mainly office chairs and some nursery brands. Few UK home furniture ranges carry it. Check UL's SPOT database or ask the brand for the certificate number. Where certified pieces are not available, solid wood with an oil, wax or water-based finish is the practical alternative.
Does FSC mean furniture is low-emission?
+
No. FSC certifies that the wood came from responsibly managed forests and tracks it through the supply chain. It does not test glues, finishes or formaldehyde, so FSC chipboard furniture can emit as much as any other chipboard furniture. Look for an emissions label such as GREENGUARD Gold, Nordic Swan or Blue Angel alongside it.
What is the difference between GREENGUARD and GREENGUARD Gold?
+
Both are chamber tests of the finished product for VOC emissions. GREENGUARD Gold uses lower limits, adds California's CDPH test method and is aimed at schools, healthcare settings and nurseries. Standard GREENGUARD is less strict but still a meaningful independent test. Ask for the certificate number so you can check which level applies to the exact model you are buying.
Is IKEA furniture low-emission?
+
Some of it is. IKEA's untreated solid pine ranges, such as IVAR, TARVA and RAST, contain little or no board. Much of the rest uses chipboard or fibreboard, which emits more formaldehyde, although IKEA says ranges such as BILLY and PAX test below the E1 limit.
Are oiled finishes better than lacquer?
+
Natural oils and waxes and water-based lacquers generally release fewer solvents than solvent-based lacquers, and once cured most finishes emit little. The bigger difference is usually the board underneath. Ask the maker what finish is used and air new pieces for a few weeks.
How long should I air new furniture?
+
Unpack it in a ventilated room and keep windows or trickle vents open for at least two weeks. Formaldehyde from board furniture can take several months to fall to low levels, so bedrooms and nurseries benefit from longer airing. Warm, humid rooms release more, so keep the room cool where you can.
