New Carpet Smell: Is It Harmful? Carpet VOCs Explained (UK)
Quick answer
New carpet smell mostly comes from 4-phenylcyclohexene (4-PCH), released by the styrene-butadiene latex that glues many carpet backings, plus VOCs from underlay and adhesives. Levels peak in the first days and fall over weeks. It can irritate eyes and airways. Ventilate hard, choose wool with a woven backing, felt underlay and tack fitting.
Our picks
Brockway British Rare Breeds Balwen Wool Carpet
Brockway
- • 100% undyed wool pile
- • Woven polypropylene backing
Honest caveat: The backing is woven polypropylene, and many wool carpets are moth-proofed with insecticide; this page does not say either way, so ask. Underlay and adhesive matter too: choose felt or rubber underlay and tack fitting rather than glue.

What causes new carpet smell?
The best-studied answer comes from US chamber tests. Carpets with a styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) latex backing mainly released 4-phenylcyclohexene (4-PCH), "the source of new carpet odour", plus styrene. A carpet with PVC backing released formaldehyde and vinyl acetate instead (Hodgson et al., 1993). 4-PCH has a very low odour threshold, so you can smell it at tiny concentrations.
The carpet is only part of the picture:
- Underlay (carpet cushion) releases its own VOCs; polyurethane foam and rubber crumb underlays are common sources (chamber study of carpet cushions).
- Adhesives used to glue carpet down can be solvent-based.
- Treatments: stain repellents (historically PFAS), soil-resist sprays and moth-proofing insecticides on wool.
What the evidence shows
| Claim | Evidence grade | Best evidence |
|---|---|---|
| New SBR-latex carpet releases 4-PCH and styrene | Strong | Hodgson et al., 1993 |
| Underlay and adhesives add VOCs | Promising | Carpet cushion study |
| Emissions fall over days to weeks | Strong | Chamber studies; GUT test limits at 3 and 28 days |
| New carpet emissions cause lasting health effects | Early | Little direct evidence; irritation and odour complaints are the main reported effects |
| Treated carpets contribute to PFAS exposure | Promising | Zhu et al., 2021, dust review |
Is new carpet smell harmful?
For most people, it is an unpleasant smell that can cause eye, nose or throat irritation and headaches in the first days. The original chamber researchers noted that, apart from formaldehyde, little is known about the health effects of these VOCs at low concentrations. Babies, people with asthma and anyone sensitive to smells are the groups to protect most. NICE guidance on indoor air at home recommends ventilating when bringing in new products and choosing low-emission materials when renovating.
PFAS are a different issue. They do not cause the smell, but they persist in dust. HSE's PFAS assessment lists rugs, carpets and carpet-care products among PFAS uses in Great Britain, and a US study linked low-pile carpet with higher blood levels of some PFAS (Zhu et al., 2021).
How long does new carpet smell last?
Most VOCs drop sharply in the first 48 to 72 hours and fall to low levels over two to four weeks with good ventilation. Labels reflect this: the European GUT label tests at 3 days and 28 days and requires total VOCs of 100 µg/m³ or less, formaldehyde of 4 µg/m³ or less and 4-PCH of 5 µg/m³ or less at 28 days (eco-INSTITUT). A smell lasting months usually points to damp, a rubber underlay or a glue, not the carpet itself.
Which labels check carpet emissions?
| Label | What it checks | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| GUT | Chamber emissions (TVOC, formaldehyde, 4-PCH), pollutants such as heavy metals, biocides and plasticisers, plus odour | European carpets, some UK ranges |
| CRI Green Label Plus | Low VOC emissions from carpet, cushion and adhesive (US trade-body programme) | US-made carpet and tiles |
| Woolmark | Wool content and quality | Many UK wool carpets (not an emissions label) |
How to choose a lower-emission carpet
- Wool or wool-rich pile, ideally undyed or with stated dyes, rather than polypropylene or nylon.
- Woven backing (such as jute or woven polypropylene) rather than foam or SBR latex. Many wool carpets still use latex to lock tufts; ask.
- Felt or natural fibre underlay instead of PU foam or rubber crumb.
- Gripper and tack fitting, not glue-down.
- No stain-proofing, or a written PFAS-free statement. Ask whether wool is moth-proofed and with what.
- A GUT or Green Label Plus certificate where available.

How we chose
We looked for fitted carpet with natural, undyed fibre and disclosed backing, an underlay that avoids foam and rubber crumb, and a rug option for people who would rather keep hard floors. None of these publishes an emissions test.
Brockway British Rare Breeds Balwen Wool Carpet
100% undyed wool from British rare-breed sheep, so there are no synthetic pile fibres or dyes. Caveat: the backing is woven polypropylene and the page does not say whether it is moth-proofed or how tufts are locked, so ask before ordering.
Flooring Hut Serenity 28oz Felt Carpet Underlay
A felt underlay described as wool felt, at about £3.10 per m², as an alternative to PU foam or rubber crumb. Caveat: no composition breakdown or emissions data is given; felt underlays often blend recycled fibres and binders.
Dunelm Boston Wool Border Rug
If you have the choice, hard floors plus a washable or woven rug is lower-emission and easier to clean than wall-to-wall carpet. This rug has wool pile and a cotton backing for £139. Caveat: no information on moth-proofing or adhesives. More options in our wool and natural rugs guide.
A ventilation plan for new carpet
- Ask the fitter to unroll the carpet in a garage or outside for a day before fitting, if practical.
- Keep windows open during fitting and for at least 72 hours afterwards; run extractor fans.
- Vacuum with a HEPA vacuum several times in the first fortnight.
- Keep babies and anyone with asthma out of the room for the first few days.
- Keep the room cool; heat raises emissions.
- If you are renovating, fit carpet last, after painting. Our low-VOC flooring guide covers alternatives such as solid wood, linoleum and tiles.
Bottom line
New carpet smell is mostly 4-PCH from latex-glued backings plus VOCs from underlay and glue, and it fades over a few weeks with good ventilation. Choose wool with a woven backing, felt underlay, tack fitting and no stain-proofing, ask about moth-proofing, and air the room well. Where you can, a woven natural rug on a hard floor is lower again.
Frequently asked questions
Is it OK to sleep in a room with new carpet?
+
Most people can, but ideally wait two or three nights with windows open, as VOC levels are highest in the first 72 hours. Babies, pregnant women and people with asthma are best kept out for the first few days. Keep the room ventilated for a few weeks.
What chemical causes new carpet smell?
+
Chamber studies identified 4-phenylcyclohexene (4-PCH) as the main source of new carpet odour, released from styrene-butadiene latex used to glue carpet backings. Styrene, other VOCs from underlay and adhesives, and sometimes formaldehyde add to it. 4-PCH has a very low odour threshold, so the smell can linger after levels are already low.
How do I get rid of new carpet smell?
+
Ventilate: open windows, run extractor fans and keep the room cool. Vacuum frequently with a HEPA vacuum. Baking soda can absorb some odour but does not remove VOCs. If smell lasts for months, check for damp, a rubber underlay or glue.
Are wool carpets lower in VOCs?
+
Wool pile avoids synthetic fibres, but emissions mostly come from the backing latex, underlay and glue. A wool carpet with woven backing, felt underlay and tack fitting is a lower-emission choice. Ask whether the wool is moth-proofed and which insecticide is used, as that is not shown on most labels.
Do carpets contain PFAS?
+
Some have been treated with PFAS-based stain repellents. HSE lists carpets, rugs and carpet-care products among PFAS uses in GB. Avoid stain-proof treatments unless the maker confirms they are PFAS-free, and vacuum regularly with a HEPA vacuum to reduce dust, which is where PFAS tend to collect indoors.
What carpet label should I look for?
+
GUT is the most thorough European label, testing emissions after 28 days plus pollutants and odour. CRI Green Label Plus is a US trade-body emissions test. Woolmark confirms wool content only and is not an emissions label. Few carpets sold in the UK carry GUT, so ask your retailer which ranges do.
