Best Solid Wood Bed Frames UK: Low-Emission Picks Checked
Quick answer
The best lower-emission bed frames are solid wood (pine, beech or oak) with an untreated, oiled or water-based finish and solid rather than glued slats. Get Laid Beds' Oxford is our top pick: 100% solid wood, solid slats and an untreated option. IKEA TARVA is the budget choice. Watch for veneer, MDF headboards and laminated slats.
Our picks
Get Laid Beds Oxford Bed
Get Laid Beds
- • 100% solid wood, pine or hardwood
- • Solid slats, screwed in
Honest caveat: The coloured finishes are stains whose chemistry is not published, so choose Untreated if finishes are your concern. £399 is a sale price (was £567) and varies by size and timber.

IKEA TARVA Bed Frame, Pine, Luröy, Standard Double
IKEA
- • Untreated solid pine frame
- • Galvanised steel midbeam
Honest caveat: The included Luröy slats are layer-glued wood veneer with an adhesive resin coating, so the slats are glued wood. The pine is soft and dents. Any oil or wax you add changes the emissions picture.

Naturalmat The Otterton Bed
Naturalmat

Heal’s Lars Bed Oak
Heal's

You spend about eight hours a night with your face a metre from your bed frame, in a room that is often closed up. A frame made from board, veneer and solvent lacquer adds formaldehyde and other VOCs to that air, especially when new. A solid wood frame with a simple finish removes most of that. This guide checks what UK beds are actually made of. For the mattress on top, see our non-toxic mattress guide.

What makes a bed frame lower-emission?
- The frame is solid wood throughout. "Oak veneer", "oak effect" and "solid and veneered" all mean some board.
- The slats are solid. Most sprung slats are laminated (glued) veneer. Solid slats or an untreated wooden base avoid that glue.
- The finish is simple. Untreated, natural oil, wax or water-based lacquer. Coloured stains and solvent lacquers add short-term emissions.
- The headboard has no hidden board or foam. Upholstered headboards are often MDF with polyurethane foam, which in the UK must meet fire rules that often lead to flame retardants (see our non-toxic sofa guide).
Which wood is best: pine, beech or oak?
From an emissions point of view, any solid timber is a big step up from board. Pine is cheapest and lightest but soft, dents easily and has a resinous smell when new that fades. Beech is hard, pale and stable, and is the usual choice for slats. Oak is heavy, very durable and takes oil well, which is why it dominates the premium end. Choose on budget, look and weight rather than emissions.
How we chose
We checked each UK product page for frame material, slat construction, finish and headboard filling. We excluded frames described as veneered, "engineered" or "oak effect", and most upholstered beds whose filling is not disclosed. We kept one upholstered option that uses natural fillings and one designer frame with gaps we flag. Picks span £149 to £1,629 across five brands, and prices are for the size noted. No brand paid to be included.
The picks
Get Laid Beds Oxford Bed: best overall
Get Laid Beds says the Oxford is 100% solid wood, in pine or hardwoods, with solid slats twice as thick as typical slats and screwed in place, and offers an Untreated finish. It is handmade in the UK and was £399 on sale (normally £567). Caveat: the coloured finishes are stains whose make-up is not published, so choose Untreated if finishes matter to you, and expect the price to change with size and timber.
IKEA TARVA Bed Frame, Pine: best budget
An untreated solid pine frame with a steel midbeam for £149 (double). It is the lowest-cost route to a solid wood bed we found. Caveat: the included Luröy slats are layer-glued veneer with an adhesive resin coating, and soft pine dents. Swap to solid slats later if you want to remove the glued part.
Tikamoon Adrien Solid Oak Bed Frame: best oiled oak
FSC solid oak with pine as the secondary wood, an oiled finish, mortise-and-tenon joints and no composite materials. Caveat: it is a European 160 x 200 cm size (between UK king and super king) and the slatted base is sold separately, so budget for both.
Natural Bed Company Kumo Low Bed: best choice of timbers
Handmade in Sheffield in pine, beech, ash, oak, maple, cherry or walnut, with a 12-year structural guarantee. A good choice if you want a specific hardwood or a made-to-measure size. Caveat: the standard finish is a clear lacquer and the sprung beech slats are likely laminated; ask about oil or unfinished options.
Naturalmat The Otterton Bed: best upholstered option
If you want a soft headboard, this is the one we would choose. Handmade in Devon on a solid oak plinth with oak legs, filled with organic wool and recycled denim. Naturalmat says its beds contain no synthetic foam or chemical fire retardants. Caveat: the base is upholstered rather than all-wood and there is no emissions test for the finished bed.
Heal's Lars Bed Oak: also consider
Solid oiled oak legs, frame and headboard structure, with an upholstered cashmere headboard. Caveat: Heal's does not say what is inside the headboard padding or how the slats are built, so we grade it Early until you confirm both.
What to avoid
- "Solid wood" headlines with veneer or MDF in the spec. Some premium oak beds are "solid and veneered oak".
- Upholstered beds with undisclosed fillings. They usually contain PU foam and, to pass UK fire tests, often flame retardants.
- Ottoman storage beds. The large box is almost always chipboard or MDF.
- Very cheap "solid pine" frames from unknown sellers. Check the slats and headboard are not board.
What the evidence says
No study compares bed frames directly with sleep or health. Chamber studies show board materials emit formaldehyde for months and other VOCs for weeks (Brown, 1999), and HSE's 2026 report links new particleboard furniture to higher home formaldehyde. UKHSA's long-term guideline for formaldehyde is 10 µg/m³, below the level many UK homes measure. A solid wood frame is a sensible way to remove one source from your bedroom; it is not a proven health treatment.
What about the bedroom as a whole?
The frame is one part of the bedroom air. The mattress is closer to your face and often contains foam and flame retardants (see our non-toxic mattress guide), wardrobes and chests are often chipboard (see our formaldehyde in furniture guide), and a new carpet adds its own VOCs. NICE advises ventilating when you bring in new products. Practical order of priority:
- Mattress and bedding
- The biggest board furniture (wardrobes, ottoman beds)
- The bed frame and headboard
- Flooring and rugs
How to look after a solid wood bed
Untreated and oiled frames are easy to maintain: wipe with a damp cloth, re-oil scuffed areas once a year with a natural or low-VOC oil, and tighten bolts every few months. Unlike veneer, solid wood can be sanded and refinished, which is part of why it lasts decades.
Bottom line
Choose solid wood, solid slats and a simple finish, and you have done most of the work. The Get Laid Beds Oxford ticks all three boxes in its untreated version. On a budget, IKEA TARVA is genuinely solid pine; just know the slats are glued. Air any new bed for a couple of weeks with the window open.
Frequently asked questions
Are wooden bed frames better than metal ones for emissions?
+
A plain powder-coated metal frame and an untreated solid wood frame are both low-emission choices. The higher emitters are frames made from MDF or chipboard, upholstered frames with foam, and anything with a fresh solvent-based finish. Ottoman storage beds usually contain a lot of board, so check the specification.
Are sprung slats glued?
+
Usually. Most sprung slats are made from thin layers of beech veneer glued and bent into a curve. The glue can release small amounts of formaldehyde. Solid, flat slats avoid that, and some makers, such as Get Laid Beds, fit them as standard. The amount of glue is small, so slats matter less than a board headboard or base.
What finish is best on a wooden bed?
+
Untreated wood, natural oil or wax, or a water-based lacquer release the least solvent. Once cured, most finishes emit little, so airing the room for a couple of weeks after delivery matters more than the exact finish. If you finish a bed yourself, choose a water-based or natural oil product.
Is IKEA TARVA really solid wood?
+
Yes, IKEA lists the TARVA frame as solid pine, sold untreated, with a galvanised steel midbeam. The included Luröy slats are layer-glued wood veneer with an adhesive resin coating, so the slats are the glued part. You can swap them for solid slats later, and the untreated frame can be oiled or waxed with a low-VOC product if you want more protection.
Is an upholstered bed a problem?
+
Not necessarily, but most use MDF and polyurethane foam, and UK fire rules often lead makers to add flame retardants to upholstered domestic furniture. If you want upholstery, look for wool, coir or latex fillings and ask about flame retardants.
How long does a new bed frame off-gas?
+
Solid wood with a cured oil or water-based finish emits little after the first week or two. Board and veneer frames can release formaldehyde for months. Unpack new beds in a ventilated room and keep the bedroom window open for the first few weeks.
