Best Fragrance-Free Men’s Skincare in the UK (2026)

Quick answer

For a fragrance-free men's routine, we suggest Bulldog Sensitive Shave Gel (£3.75), CeraVe PM Facial Moisturising Lotion (£17), La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+ instead of aftershave balm, Ultrasun Mineral Face SPF50 and The Ordinary Squalane as a beard oil. Read every ingredient list: some products labelled 'sensitive' still contain essential oils.

CeraVe PM Facial Moisturising Lotion

CeraVe

Promising research
  • • Fragrance-free
  • • Ceramides, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid

Honest caveat: Despite the ’PM’ name it is fine in the morning, but it has no SPF, so a separate sunscreen is still needed.

Bulldog Sensitive Moisturiser

Bulldog

Promising research
  • • No parfum on the INCI list
  • • Light lotion

Honest caveat: It is a basic formula without ceramides or niacinamide, and it has no SPF, so you still need sunscreen on top in daylight.

Bulldog Sensitive Shave Gel

Bulldog

  • • No parfum on the INCI list
  • • Glycerin and willowherb

Honest caveat: It contains sodium metabisulfite, which a small number of people react to. Bulldog’s Sensitive Aftershave Balm, by contrast, lists cedarwood and patchouli oils, so check each product in the range.

  • • UV filters: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide only

The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalane 30ml

The Ordinary

Promising research
  • • One ingredient: squalane
  • • No parfum or essential oils

Honest caveat: It is sold as a face oil, not a beard oil, so the bottle is small for a long beard. Squalane is light, so very coarse beards may want something heavier.

Fragrance is one of the most common reasons skincare stings or flares up, and men's grooming products are some of the most heavily scented on the shelf. Here are fragrance-free options for each step, from shaving to SPF.

How we chose

We read the full ingredient (INCI) list for every product and excluded anything listing parfum, fragrance, aroma or essential oils (such as cedarwood, patchouli, lavender or citrus oils). We covered each step of a typical men's routine and looked for prices from under £5 to around £25, with UK stock. Grades are Moderate: avoiding fragrance is well supported for reactive skin, but these products are not independently tested as a group.

Why go fragrance-free?

The NHS lists fragrances and preservatives in cosmetics among the most common triggers of allergic contact dermatitis (an itchy, red rash), and perfumes among common irritants. Large European studies such as the EDEN Fragrance Study link the use of scented products with fragrance allergy in the general population. Once you are allergic, it tends to be for life, and you then have to avoid that fragrance ingredient in everything from shower gel to laundry products.

Fragrance-free is not the same as hypoallergenic. You can still react to preservatives, plant extracts, lanolin or other ingredients, so if one of our picks irritates you, stop using it. Patch-test a new product on a small area of the jaw or inner arm for a few days first, especially if you have eczema or have reacted to products before.

Shaving makes this worse: a razor removes a thin layer of skin and leaves tiny nicks, so whatever you put on next reaches deeper. That is why aftershaves and scented balms often sting.

What does "for sensitive skin" actually mean?

Not much, legally. "Sensitive", "natural" and even "unscented" are marketing terms. Bulldog's Sensitive Shave Gel and Sensitive Moisturiser contain no parfum, but its Sensitive Aftershave Balm lists cedarwood and patchouli oils. Always read the INCI list: fragrance usually appears as "parfum" near the end, with named allergens such as limonene or linalool after it.

Our picks

CeraVe PM Facial Moisturising Lotion (Best overall)

A light, fragrance-free lotion with ceramides (fats that help the skin barrier), niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, £17 at Lookfantastic. It sinks in fast and suits most skin types after shaving. Caveat: no SPF, so pair it with a sunscreen in daylight.

Bulldog Sensitive Moisturiser (Budget pick)

At £6.60, a light lotion with no parfum or essential oils, easy to find in UK supermarkets. Caveat: a basic formula without barrier ingredients like ceramides; it contains sodium metabisulfite, which a few people react to.

Bulldog Sensitive Shave Gel (Best shave gel)

A clear gel with a short ingredient list and no parfum, for under £4. Glycerin helps the razor glide. Caveat: it does not give the thick lather some men like, and it also contains sodium metabisulfite.

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+ (Best post-shave)

We struggled to find a truly fragrance-free aftershave balm, so we recommend this multi-purpose repair balm instead, £16.91 at Lookfantastic. It has panthenol (vitamin B5), shea butter and glycerin and no parfum, and works well on patches of razor burn. Caveat: thick, with a slight white tint; best on small areas rather than the whole face.

Ultrasun Mineral Face SPF50 (Best SPF)

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide filters only, with no parfum on the list, £21.60. The NHS recommends at least SPF30 with 4-star UVA protection, applied generously. Bald or shaved heads need it too. Caveat: small tube for the price; possible white cast on darker skin.

The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalane (Best beard oil)

Nearly every beard oil we checked was scented. This is one ingredient, squalane, for £9.90: a light oil that softens beard hair and the skin underneath. A few drops is enough. Caveat: sold as a face oil, so the 30ml bottle goes quickly on a long beard.

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Sensitive Moisturiser (Also consider)

A richer fragrance-free cream with squalane, shea and niacinamide, £23. Good for drier skin or winter. Caveat: too heavy for very oily skin.

What to avoid

  • Alcohol-based aftershave splashes. High alcohol plus fragrance on freshly shaved skin is a recipe for stinging.
  • "Unscented" products with masking fragrance. Some contain a small amount of fragrance to cover base smells. "Fragrance-free" plus a clean INCI list is the safer bet.
  • Essential oils marketed as natural soothers. Tea tree, lavender, cedarwood and citrus oils are fragrance materials and common allergens.
  • Menthol and strong cooling agents, which can irritate even without fragrance.
  • Scented beard balms and oils if you have redness or flaking under the beard.

How can I reduce razor burn and shaving bumps?

  • Shave after a warm shower, when hair is softer.
  • Use a sharp blade and replace it often; dull blades drag and nick.
  • Shave with the grain, using light strokes, and avoid going over the same patch repeatedly.
  • Rinse the blade between strokes.
  • Consider an electric trimmer or leaving a little stubble if you get ingrown hairs (common with tightly curled hair).
  • Do not pick or squeeze bumps, which can lead to infection and dark marks.

How should a simple fragrance-free routine look?

  1. Wash with lukewarm water or a fragrance-free cleanser.
  2. Shave with a sharp blade and a fragrance-free gel, going with the grain.
  3. Rinse with cool water and pat dry.
  4. Moisturise; use the repair balm on any razor burn.
  5. Apply SPF in daylight.
  6. A few drops of squalane on the beard, if you have one.

If you get persistent rashes, bumps after shaving or flaking that does not settle, see a GP or pharmacist. They can check for contact dermatitis, ingrown hairs or seborrhoeic dermatitis and arrange patch testing if needed.

Bottom line

Fragrance-free men's skincare does not need to be expensive. A Bulldog Sensitive shave gel, a plain moisturiser such as CeraVe PM, a mineral SPF and a single-ingredient oil cover the whole routine for under £55. Read every INCI list, because "sensitive" on the front does not guarantee "no parfum" on the back.

Frequently asked questions

Why should men use fragrance-free skincare?

+

Fragrance is one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis, according to the NHS, and shaving makes skin more reactive by removing a thin surface layer. If your skin stings, reddens or itches after grooming products, switching to fragrance-free options is the simplest first step. Once a fragrance allergy develops, it usually lasts for life.

Is Bulldog Sensitive fragrance-free?

+

Partly. Bulldog's Sensitive Shave Gel, Sensitive Foaming Shave Gel and Sensitive Moisturiser list no parfum. But the Sensitive Aftershave Balm lists cedarwood and patchouli oils, which are fragrance materials. Check the ingredient list of each product rather than relying on the range name.

What can I use instead of aftershave?

+

Rinse with cool water, then apply a fragrance-free moisturiser. For razor burn, a fragrance-free repair balm such as La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+ works well on small areas. Avoid alcohol-based aftershave splashes, which combine alcohol and fragrance on freshly shaved skin.

How do I spot fragrance on an ingredient list?

+

Look for 'parfum', 'fragrance' or 'aroma', usually near the end of the INCI list, followed by named allergens such as limonene, linalool, citral or geraniol. Essential oils appear under their Latin names, for example Cedrus atlantica (cedarwood) or Lavandula angustifolia (lavender). 'Unscented' does not always mean fragrance-free.

Is there a fragrance-free beard oil?

+

Most beard oils are scented. A simple option is a single-ingredient oil such as The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalane, which is sold as a face oil but works well on beards. Use a few drops on damp beard hair and work it into the skin underneath.

Do men need sunscreen every day?

+

The NHS recommends at least SPF30 with 4-star UVA protection when the sun is strong, applied generously and reapplied. A daily mineral SPF on the face, ears, neck and any bald or shaved scalp is a sensible habit from spring to autumn, and year-round if you spend a lot of time outdoors.
