Best Non-Toxic Dishwasher Tablets UK (2026): Fragrance-Free Picks and the PVA Question

Early researchLast reviewed By the Longer Living Guide editorial team

Quick answer

The best lower-exposure dishwasher tablets are fragrance-free with a published ingredient list. Ecover Wrapper Free Zero is our top pick (0% fragrance, no individual wrapper). ecoLiving's fragrance-free tablets are the budget choice. PVA film is a contested environmental question rather than a proven health issue, and rinse aid is worth minimising.

Ecover

Promising research
  • • 0% fragrance
  • • No individual plastic wrapper

Honest caveat: It contains the enzymes subtilisin and amylase, carries an eye-irritation warning and an enzyme allergy notice, and Ecover does not name the ’invisible coating’ material. The £6.80 was a 20% offer on Ecover Direct (normally £8.50).

Promising research
  • • No enzymes, film, phosphates or fragrance
  • • Soil Association certified organic

Honest caveat: At £19.95 for roughly 67 to 100 washes it costs about 20 to 30p a wash, and without enzymes or oxygen bleach it may struggle with tea stains and dried-on starch. Refills were not available when we checked.

Miniml

Early research
  • • Fragrance-free
  • • Short ingredient list

Honest caveat: Rinse aid is designed to stay on dishes. A 2023 lab study linked alcohol ethoxylates (a common rinse-aid surfactant) to gut-cell barrier damage, and Miniml does not name which non-ionic surfactant it uses. The 400ml bottle was sold out when we checked; the 5L refill (£22.95) was listed.

What should you look for in lower-exposure dishwasher tablets?

Dishwasher detergent is rinsed off, but a thin residue can stay on plates and glasses, so it is worth choosing a simple formula. The priorities, in order of how strong the evidence is: no fragrance (added scent serves no cleaning purpose and is a common skin allergen, per the NHS), a published ingredient list, a fragrance-free or minimal rinse aid (or none at all), and, if it matters to you, no PVA film. On PVA, the evidence is genuinely contested, which we explain below.

How we chose

We compared fragrance-free and "eco" dishwasher products sold in the UK, read every ingredient list we could find, and excluded tablets that list "parfum". That ruled out some popular eco brands: smol's dishwasher tablets, for example, list parfum and polyvinyl alcohol on smol's own ingredient page. We then weighed film type, enzymes and price per wash. None of our picks has independent product-level testing for residues, so grades are moderate or limited. Prices checked October 2026.

The best non-toxic dishwasher tablets in the UK

Ecover Wrapper Free Zero All-in-One: best overall

Ecover's Zero tablets have 0% fragrance and 0% phosphonates, a full published ingredient list and, in this version, no individual plastic wrapper. Caveat: they contain the enzymes subtilisin and amylase (with an allergy notice on the pack), and Ecover does not name the protective coating it uses instead of a wrapper. The standard Zero tablets are still individually wrapped in plastic.

ecoLiving TABS Fragrance Free: best budget

At about 20p a wash these are among the cheapest fragrance-free tablets, and the retailer describes the film as plant cellulose rather than PVA. Caveat: only the main ingredient classes are listed, so we cannot rule out enzymes or check the preservative.

ecoLiving Soapy Suds Powder Fragrance Free: best film-free option

A loose fragrance-free powder means no film of any kind, and you can use less on light loads. About 50 washes per pouch. Caveat: partial ingredient list, and powder can clump in a damp cupboard.

Koh Dishwashing Tabs: best big pack

Fifty fragrance-free tablets with GECA eco-certification and Sensitive Choice approval, an asthma and allergy programme from Asthma Australia. Caveat: they contain amylase and protease enzymes, and the "biodegradable wrapper" material is not named.

Bio-D Dishwasher Tablets: also consider

Phosphate-free tablets from a UK company whose FAQ says they are free from synthetic fragrance. Caveat: they use a water-soluble film, contain enzymes including subtilisin, and were out of stock on Bio-D's shop when we checked.

Greenscents Organic Dishwasher Liquid (Nonscents): best premium

If you want to avoid enzymes, film, phosphates and fragrance all at once, this Soil Association certified liquid is the only pick that does. Caveat: at about 20 to 30p a wash and without oxygen bleach, it may struggle with tea stains and dried-on starch.

Dishwasher Rinse Aid - Pure Fragrance Free: if you need rinse aid

Miniml's rinse aid is fragrance-free with a short formula and a 5L refill. Caveat: see the rinse aid section below; if you have soft water, try skipping rinse aid entirely.

Is PVA film in dishwasher tablets harmful?

This is the most contested question in the category. Most wrapped tablets and capsules use polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a water-soluble plastic. A 2021 modelling study estimated that roughly three-quarters of PVA from US detergent pods might pass through wastewater treatment without fully breaking down (Rolsky and Kelkar, 2021). However, that study relied on modelled assumptions and was funded by Blueland, a company that sells PVA-free tablets, and it has not been replicated with measurements from UK treatment works. There is no evidence that PVA film is a direct health hazard to people using the dishwasher. Our view: PVA is an environmental question with limited data, not a personal exposure issue. If you want to avoid it, choose a wrapper-free tablet or a loose powder.

Should you use rinse aid?

Rinse aid is designed to stay on your dishes to help water sheet off. A 2023 laboratory study on human gut cells found that residues of a professional rinse aid, specifically its alcohol ethoxylate surfactants, damaged the gut lining's barrier in a dose-dependent way (Ogulur et al., 2023). This was a cell study using professional machines with short rinse cycles, so it does not prove harm from home dishwashers. Still, it is a reasonable precaution to use rinse aid only if you need it for hard water spotting, set the dispenser to its lowest effective level, and choose a fragrance-free one. Many all-in-one tablets already contain a rinse agent.

What do enzymes and oxygen bleach do?

Most effective tablets combine oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate, which breaks down to oxygen, water and soda), enzymes (protease for protein, amylase for starch), builders such as sodium citrate to soften water, and a small amount of surfactant. These are not red flags in themselves, and they let tablets work at lower temperatures. The trade-off is that enzymes carry a legal allergy notice. If anyone in your home reacts to enzyme products, an enzyme-free option such as the Greenscents liquid is worth the extra cost.

How do you get better results from eco tablets?

Most complaints about eco tablets come down to how the machine is used. Scrape plates rather than rinsing them (enzymes need some food soil to work on), use the eco or 50 to 55°C programme for everyday loads and a hotter cycle for pans, keep the filter clean, and top up dishwasher salt if you have a softener and hard water. If glasses come out cloudy, check the salt before reaching for more rinse aid. A monthly hot empty cycle helps clear grease build-up without a separate scented "machine cleaner".

What does the label have to tell you?

Under UK detergent labelling rules, packs must list perfumes, enzymes and disinfectants if added, preservatives by name, and named allergenic fragrances above 0.01% (Detergents Regulation, Annex VII). Look for "perfumes" or names like limonene and linalool in the small print, and walk past anything that lists them.

What to avoid

  • Tablets listing "parfum" or "perfumes" (they add nothing to cleaning).
  • Running rinse aid at the maximum setting in a soft-water area.
  • Chlorine-bleach dishwasher products; never mix dishwasher or cleaning products with bleach (UKHSA).
  • Assuming "eco" means fragrance-free: always check the ingredient list.

For other kitchen swaps, see our guide to eco washing up liquid and the non-toxic cleaning products hub.

Bottom line

Pick a fragrance-free tablet with a published ingredient list and use rinse aid only if you need it. Ecover Wrapper Free Zero is our top pick because it is fragrance-free, fully disclosed and avoids an individual wrapper. ecoLiving's tablets are the budget choice, and Greenscents' liquid is the one to choose if you want no enzymes and no film at all.

Frequently asked questions

Are eco dishwasher tablets as good as Finish or Fairy?

+

Eco tablets have improved, but performance varies, especially on tea stains and dried-on starch. Tablets with oxygen bleach and enzymes, such as Ecover Zero and Koh, tend to perform closest to mainstream brands. Enzyme-free options are gentler but may need a pre-rinse or a hotter cycle for heavy soiling.

What is PVA in dishwasher tablets?

+

PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) is a water-soluble film that wraps many tablets and dissolves in the wash. A 2021 study estimated much of it may not fully break down in wastewater treatment, but it was modelled and funded by a PVA-free brand. There is no evidence it harms people using the dishwasher. If you want to avoid it, choose wrapper-free tablets or loose powder.

Is rinse aid harmful?

+

A 2023 lab study found that alcohol ethoxylates in a professional rinse aid damaged human gut cells in the lab, and residue was measured on dishes from professional machines. It did not test home dishwashers or people. A reasonable precaution is to use rinse aid only for hard water spotting, at the lowest setting, and choose a fragrance-free one.

Why do dishwasher tablets carry an allergy warning?

+

Many tablets contain the enzyme subtilisin, which breaks down protein soils. Products containing it must carry the notice "may produce an allergic reaction". This mainly matters when handling tablets or dust. If anyone at home reacts to enzymes, choose an enzyme-free product such as Greenscents' organic dishwasher liquid.

Do I need dishwasher salt?

+

Salt is only needed if your machine has a water softener and you live in a hard water area. It is plain sodium chloride and recharges the machine's softening unit, so it is not an exposure concern. Using salt properly can reduce the need for rinse aid, because softer water leaves fewer spots on glasses.
