Best Stainless Steel Lunch Boxes UK (2026): Plastic-Free and Leakproof
Quick answer
For dry lunches, the Elephant Box (304 stainless steel, no seal, £32.50) and A Slice of Green Chapra tiffin (£15) keep plastic and silicone out entirely. For leakproof lunches, the Black+Blum Large and Elephant Box Clip & Seal use steel with silicone seals. Steel cannot go in the microwave, so reheat in glass.
Our picks

Elephant Box 2L Stainless Steel Lunch Box
Elephant Box
- • 304 stainless steel throughout
- • No seal or plastic parts
Honest caveat: Elephant Box says this model is not leakproof. It cannot go in the microwave, so reheating means decanting.
Elephant Box

Black+Blum Stainless Steel Lunch Box Large
Black+Blum
- • 304 (18/8) stainless steel
- • Vacuum-valve leakproof lid
Honest caveat: The strap is silicone and the valve and seal materials are not itemised on the page. Not for the microwave.
Black+Blum

Elephant Box Clip & Seal Small
Elephant Box
- • Stainless steel box and lid
- • Silicone seal, leakproof
Honest caveat: The seal and the band are silicone; the seal touches wet food at the rim. Remove the lid before microwave or oven use, as the brand advises.
Elephant Box

A Slice of Green Doda Leak Resistant Lunch Box
A Slice of Green
- • Stainless steel
- • Silicone seal, leak resistant
Honest caveat: Leak resistant, not leakproof: the brand says it is not designed for liquids and travels best flat. The seal is silicone.
A Slice of Green

A Slice of Green Chapra Two Tier Lunch Box
A Slice of Green
- • All stainless steel
- • No seal, no plastic
Honest caveat: No seal means it can leak with very wet food. Small at 13cm across.
A Slice of Green

Black+Blum Stainless Steel Bento Box
Black+Blum
- • Two 500ml steel containers
- • Leakproof (brand claim)
Honest caveat: The product image file name refers to a PP (polypropylene) lid part, so check which inner lids are plastic before buying. The bamboo lid needs hand washing.

How we chose
A stainless steel lunch box swaps plastic for metal where your food sits, but many have plastic or silicone lids and seals. For each box we checked the steel grade, the lid and seal materials, and whether the brand calls it leakproof, leak resistant or neither. We favoured UK brands and sellers with clear materials information. Stainless steel is well understood as a food-contact material, so these are graded "moderate"; none has independent migration testing.
Is a stainless steel lunch box better than plastic?
For most lunches, yes, mainly because of durability and heat:
- No microplastic shedding from the box itself. Research on polypropylene baby bottles found heat and repeated sterilisation significantly increased microplastic release (Li et al., 2020). Lunch boxes are rarely heated, but warm food and dishwashers stress plastics over time.
- Bisphenols are being phased out of plastics. The EU has restricted bisphenol A (BPA) and related bisphenols in food contact materials (Regulation (EU) 2024/3190); steel never needed them.
- It lasts. A steel box can last for years, while plastic scratches, stains and cracks.
Steel is not perfect. It contains nickel and chromium, small amounts of which can migrate, mainly from new items and with acidic food. EFSA has assessed nickel in food and water (EFSA, 2020). For lunch boxes, contact times are short and foods are rarely very acidic, so this is a minor point except for people with a nickel allergy.
Leakproof, leak resistant or neither?
| Type | How it seals | Good for | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-steel, no seal | Metal lid and clips | Sandwiches, dry snacks | Elephant Box, Chapra |
| Silicone-sealed | Silicone gasket in lid | Dressed salads, dips | Clip & Seal, Doda |
| Valve or vacuum lid | Pressure valve and seal | Saucy leftovers | Black+Blum Large |
Leakproof boxes almost always use silicone. Food-grade silicone is regulated, and Germany's BfR recommends limits on its volatile compounds (BfR Recommendation XV). The seal touches food only at the rim, so this is a small exposure, but it is the trade-off for no leaks.
The best stainless steel lunch boxes in the UK
Elephant Box 2L Stainless Steel Lunch Box: best overall for dry food
Made from 304 stainless steel with roll clips, it has no seal, plastic or coating at all, and it is tough enough for school bags and bike panniers. Caveat: Elephant Box states it is not leakproof, and steel cannot go in the microwave.
Black+Blum Stainless Steel Lunch Box Large: best leakproof
A 1 litre 304 (18/8) steel box with a vacuum-valve lid that Black+Blum says is fully leakproof, plus a steel fork and divider. It can go in the oven or freezer. Caveat: the strap is silicone and the valve and seal materials are not itemised.
Elephant Box Clip & Seal Small: leakproof in three sizes
A steel box with a food-grade silicone seal, a movable divider and a stretchy band, in 800ml, 1.2L and 2L. Caveat: the seal touches wet food at the rim; remove the lid before reheating.
A Slice of Green Doda Leak Resistant Lunch Box: best for tall sandwiches
A deep steel box with levered clips and a silicone seal, made in North India and sold by UK shop Green Tulip. Caveat: leak resistant, not leakproof; not for soups.
A Slice of Green Chapra Two Tier Lunch Box: budget pick
A traditional two-tier steel tiffin with no seal, so only steel touches the food, for £15. Caveat: can leak with very wet food and is compact at 13cm across.
Black+Blum Stainless Steel Bento Box: two compartments
Two 500ml leakproof steel pots with a sliding divider and a bamboo lid that doubles as a chopping board. Caveat: an image on Black+Blum's page refers to a PP (polypropylene) lid part, so check which inner lid parts are plastic; the bamboo needs hand washing.
Steel, glass or plastic for packed lunches?
| Material | Weight | Breakable | Microwave | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stainless steel | Light | No | No | School and work bags, children |
| Borosilicate glass | Heavy | Yes | Yes (lid off) | Office lunches you reheat |
| Plastic | Light | No | Often | Cold, dry snacks only |
Steel is the most practical choice for anything that gets dropped, carried by children or packed in a rucksack. Glass suits adults who reheat at work and do not mind the weight. Plastic still works for dry snacks, but replace tubs once they are scratched or stained.
What size lunch box do I need?
For a sandwich and a couple of snacks, around 800ml to 1 litre is usually enough, which is the size of the Black+Blum Large and the smallest Clip & Seal. For adults with bigger appetites or salads, 1.2 to 2 litres gives room for dividers, like the 2 litre Elephant Box. Young children usually manage best with a small box plus a separate snack pot, because steel lids can be stiff for little hands. Check the internal height too: tall sandwiches and rolls need a deeper box like the Doda.
How to care for a steel lunch box
- Wash before first use to remove manufacturing oils.
- Do not microwave steel. Decant into a glass or ceramic dish to reheat.
- Remove and wash silicone seals separately; replace them if they crack or keep smelling.
- Avoid bleach and steel wool, which can pit the surface.
- For hot food, use an insulated steel food flask instead of a lunch box.
What to avoid
- "Stainless" boxes with plastic inner lids sold as plastic-free.
- Painted or coated insides, unless the coating is specified.
- Microwaving in steel, which can spark and damage the microwave.
- Very acidic foods stored for days in steel; use glass for pickles and tomato sauces.
- Novelty lunch boxes with printed or painted interiors, where the ink or paint is not specified as food-contact grade.
- Unbranded marketplace boxes with no steel grade or seal information. If a seller cannot say what the box and seal are made of, choose one that can.
- Keeping a cracked or perished seal. Most brands, including Elephant Box and Black+Blum, sell replacement parts, which is cheaper than a new box.
Bottom line
For dry lunches, the all-steel Elephant Box or A Slice of Green Chapra removes plastic and silicone entirely. If you need leakproof, the Black+Blum Large or Elephant Box Clip & Seal use silicone seals, a small and sensible trade-off. Pair any steel box with a glass dish at work for reheating.
Frequently asked questions
Are stainless steel lunch boxes better than plastic?
+
They avoid plastic touching your food, do not need bisphenols, and last far longer than plastic tubs. Research shows heat increases microplastic release from polypropylene, though lunch boxes are rarely heated. Steel can release tiny amounts of nickel, mainly when new or with acidic food, which matters mostly for people with a nickel allergy.
Are there leakproof stainless steel lunch boxes without plastic?
+
Yes, but almost all use a silicone seal. Black+Blum's Large box uses a valve lid and Elephant Box's Clip & Seal uses a food-grade silicone gasket; both are described as leakproof by their makers. All-steel boxes with no seal, such as the original Elephant Box, are not leakproof.
Can you put a stainless steel lunch box in the microwave?
+
No. Metal reflects microwaves and can spark. Decant food into a glass or ceramic dish to reheat. Some steel boxes, such as Black+Blum's Large, can go in a conventional oven without the lid, which is useful for warming food at home.
What grade of stainless steel is best for lunch boxes?
+
304 stainless steel, also called 18/8, is the standard food-grade choice and is used by Elephant Box and Black+Blum. It resists rust and staining. Some brands just say food-grade stainless steel without a grade; that is usually fine, but a stated grade is better.
Is the silicone seal in a lunch box a concern?
+
The seal touches food only at the rim, so exposure is small. Food-grade silicone is regulated, and Germany's BfR recommends limits on its volatile compounds. Remove and wash the seal regularly, replace it if it cracks or keeps smelling, and avoid storing very fatty food against it for long periods.
How do I clean a stainless steel lunch box?
+
Wash with hot soapy water or in the dishwasher if the brand allows it, and dry fully. Remove silicone seals to clean underneath. Avoid bleach, chlorine cleaners and steel wool, which can pit the surface. Bicarbonate of soda paste shifts stubborn stains and smells.
