Best Under Sink Water Filter UK (2026): RO and Carbon Compared
Quick answer
The best under-sink water filters in the UK for certified lead and PFAS reduction are reverse osmosis systems listed to NSF/ANSI 58, such as the AquaTru Under Sink (£375) and Waterdrop G3P600 (£399.99). If you want to keep minerals and avoid waste water, a ceramic and carbon system such as Doulton's HIP DUO is the UK-available alternative.
Our picks

AquaTru Under Sink Reverse Osmosis System
AquaTru
- • IAPMO-listed to NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58 and 401
- • Certified for lead, PFOA/PFOS and microplastics
Honest caveat: The UK page itself only says ’tested according to NSF standards’; the detail comes from the IAPMO listings. AquaTru says about 3 litres of tap water make 1 litre of filtered water, and the manufacturer limit is 10 grains per gallon of hardness, which many English homes exceed unless the feed is softened.

Waterdrop G3P600 Reverse Osmosis System
Waterdrop
- • IAPMO-certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 58
- • Certified for lead, PFOA/PFOS and TDS
Honest caveat: It needs mains power, a drain connection and a dedicated tap, so plan for a plumber. RO removes nearly all minerals; a remineralising cartridge is sold separately (about £34). Price was a £150 discount when checked.

Doulton HIP DUO Under Sink System with Biotect Ultra
Doulton
- • Two cartridges, separate drinking tap
- • No waste water and minerals retained
Honest caveat: The product page only says claims are ’independently tested to a range of NSF/ANSI standard protocols’, which is weaker than certification. PFAS is a claim for the optional pre-filter only, with no data we could find. Price shown was a 25% sale; full price is roughly £305.
Doulton

Waterdrop 10UA Under Sink Water Filter
Waterdrop
- • Certified for chlorine taste only (NSF/ANSI 42)
- • Fits inline to your existing tap
Honest caveat: NSF/ANSI 42 covers taste and smell, not health contaminants. Waterdrop’s ’heavy metals’ and lead wording is not backed by an NSF/ANSI 53 certification, and there is no PFAS claim for this model. The listed capacity differs between Waterdrop’s spec table and FAQ.

BRITA mypure P1 Filter Tap
BRITA
- • Three-way mixer tap with built-in filtered outlet
- • Cartridge up to 12 months
Honest caveat: BRITA lists no third-party certification or percentages for the P1000 on its UK page, and PFAS is not mentioned. You are paying mainly for the tap. Fitting usually needs a plumber.

TAPPWATER InlinePro SMR Under-Sink Water Filter
TAPPWATER
- • Widely available at Currys
- • Mineral stage after filtration
Honest caveat: The retailer listing says ’NSF-certified’ but names no standard, contaminant or certifier, and we could not open TAPPWATER’s own data page. Until a listing is published, treat its performance claims as unverified.

Claryum 2-Stage Under Sink Water Filter
Aquasana
- • WQA certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401
- • Certified for lead, PFOA/PFOS and microplastics
Honest caveat: We could not find a UK retailer or UK Aquasana store, so you would be importing a US product (US$249.99) with US plumbing fittings. Listings we saw were for the AQ-5200 model; the newer AQ-6200 has its own entries. Chloramine reduction is certified only as an aesthetic (taste) claim.

Is an under-sink water filter worth it?
An under-sink filter hides the cartridge in the cupboard and gives you filtered water on tap, either through your existing tap or a separate drinking tap. Compared with a jug you get more capacity, longer cartridge life (often 6 to 12 months) and, for the better systems, stronger certified performance. In the Duke and NC State home study, under-sink two-stage and reverse osmosis (RO) filters removed nearly all the PFAS tested, while jugs and tap-mount carbon filters were inconsistent (Herkert et al. 2020).
UK tap water already meets tight standards (Which?), so the main reasons to fit one are lead pipes in older homes (DWI), a wish to lower PFAS exposure below the DWI's precautionary guideline (DWI), or chlorine and chloramine taste.

How we chose
We looked for under-sink systems sold in the UK, then checked public certification listings for the exact model. NSF/ANSI 42 covers taste and smell only. NSF/ANSI 53 and 58 cover named health contaminants such as lead and PFOA/PFOS, and 401 covers emerging compounds such as some medicines and microplastics (NSF, NSF on PFAS). Certification can come from NSF, IAPMO R&T or WQA. Where a brand only says "tested to NSF protocols", we graded it lower. We also weighed installation, running costs and how each copes with UK hard water.
RO or carbon: which under-sink filter type is right?
Reverse osmosis under-sink systems
RO pushes water through a membrane fine enough to hold back dissolved salts, metals and most PFAS. Certified RO systems are tested to NSF/ANSI 58 for things like lead, nitrate, fluoride and TDS (total dissolved solids). Trade-offs: some water goes to drain, most need mains power and a drain connection, and the water is very low in minerals. Many UK homes have hard water, which can scale membranes, so check the hardness limit.
Carbon and ceramic under-sink systems
Two-stage carbon or ceramic plus carbon filters keep minerals, waste no water and usually need no power. Good ones can be certified for lead and PFOA/PFOS under NSF/ANSI 53. They do not reduce dissolved salts, nitrate or fluoride.
Inline versus dedicated tap
Inline filters (such as the Waterdrop 10UA) feed your existing cold tap. Dedicated-tap systems need a hole in the sink or worktop. Filter taps (such as BRITA mypure P1) replace your mixer with a three-way tap.
Our picks in detail
AquaTru Under Sink Reverse Osmosis System: best overall
IAPMO R&T lists the ATU200 under NSF/ANSI 42, 53 (PFOA, PFOS, VOCs), 58 (12 claims including lead, fluoride and TDS) and 401 (16 claims including microplastics) (TapWaterData). That is the broadest certified set we found at a UK price of £375. Caveat: AquaTru says about 3 litres of tap water make 1 litre filtered, and its stated hardness limit is 10 grains per gallon, which many English homes exceed unless the feed is softened. The UK page itself only says "tested according to NSF standards".
Waterdrop G3P600 Reverse Osmosis System: best for busy kitchens
IAPMO R&T certifies it to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 (including PFOA/PFOS) and 58 (including lead and TDS) (TapWaterData). It is tankless and fast, with a 2:1 pure-to-drain ratio, which is better than AquaTru. Caveat: needs power, a drain and a dedicated tap; remineralisation is a separate £34 cartridge.
Doulton HIP DUO Under Sink System with Biotect Ultra: best for keeping minerals
Two cartridges feed a separate tap: Doulton's Biotect Ultra ceramic and carbon element plus a selectable pre-filter. Doulton lists lead, chlorine and chloramine among Biotect Ultra's reductions and says the element is NSF-certified to 42, 53 and 401 (Doulton). Its predecessor cartridge showed over 99% lead reduction in NSF data on file with California's water board (data sheet). Caveat: the system page only says "tested to NSF/ANSI protocols", and PFAS is claimed only for an optional pre-filter with no data we could find.
Waterdrop 10UA Under Sink Water Filter: budget pick
At £59.49 with a year-long cartridge, it is the cheapest tidy way to cut chlorine taste at your existing tap. Caveat: it is certified only to NSF/ANSI 42 (taste) and 372 (lead-free parts). It has no certified lead or PFAS claim, so it is not the right choice for older homes with lead pipes.
BRITA mypure P1 Filter Tap: best filter tap
Replaces your kitchen mixer with a three-way tap, with the P1000 cartridge under the sink for up to 12 months. Caveat: BRITA's UK page lists no certification or percentages and does not mention PFAS; most of the £299.99 is the tap.
TAPPWATER InlinePro SMR Under-Sink Water Filter: also consider
Sold at Currys with a mineral stage after filtering. Caveat: the listing says "NSF-certified" without naming a standard or contaminant, so we could not verify the claims.
Claryum 2-Stage Under Sink Water Filter: best-certified non-RO, but a US import
WQA Gold Seal certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 (including PFOA/PFOS and lead) and 401 (microplastics) (TapWaterData). Caveat: we could not find a UK retailer, so you would be importing a US product with US fittings and no UK support.
What the evidence says
- Under-sink two-stage and RO filters were the only types that removed nearly all PFAS in real homes (Herkert et al. 2020).
- NSF says a certified PFAS claim requires reducing PFAS to below 20 parts per trillion; boiling does not remove PFAS (NSF).
- For lead, the US EPA tells buyers to check for NSF/ANSI 53 on the cartridge itself (US EPA).
- Neglected cartridges can release trapped contaminants and grow bacteria; change them on schedule (Which?).
What about whole-house filters?
Whole-house (point-of-entry) filters treat water where it enters the home, so every tap and shower is covered. They are mainly sold for chlorine taste, sediment or limescale. For drinking water concerns they are a weaker choice: in the Duke study, whole-house carbon systems gave unpredictable PFAS results and in four of eight homes PFAS levels rose (Herkert et al. 2020). The US EPA also notes whole-house filters do not deal with lead from plumbing inside the building (US EPA). For drinking and cooking, a certified under-sink filter at the kitchen tap is the better target.
What to avoid
- "NSF certified" with no standard or contaminant named. NSF/ANSI 42 alone is a taste certification.
- Fitting a filter after a water softener for your drinking tap; the DWI advises keeping an unsoftened drinking supply (DWI).
- RO without checking your water hardness and the unit's limit.
- Whole-house carbon units bought for PFAS at the tap; some raised PFAS in the Duke study.
Bottom line
For the broadest certified reduction under the sink, the AquaTru Under Sink and Waterdrop G3P600 are the two we would shortlist; the Waterdrop wastes less water, the AquaTru covers more listed claims. If you want to keep minerals and avoid waste water, Doulton's HIP DUO is the best UK-available option, though its certification wording is less clear. If you only dislike the taste of chlorine, the Waterdrop 10UA is a cheap fix. See also our best water filter guide and reverse osmosis guide.
Frequently asked questions
Are under-sink water filters better than jugs?
+
Usually, yes. They hold more water, cartridges last 6 to 12 months, and the best two-stage and RO systems removed nearly all PFAS in a Duke University home study, where jugs were inconsistent. They cost more and need fitting. A certified jug such as ZeroWater can be a good choice if you rent.
Do I need a plumber to fit an under-sink filter?
+
Simple inline filters that feed your existing cold tap are often DIY jobs. Systems with a dedicated tap need a hole in the sink or worktop, and RO systems also need a drain connection and usually a socket. Most people use a plumber for those. A WaterSafe-accredited plumber is a good choice in the UK.
Do under-sink filters remove limescale?
+
Carbon filters do not remove hardness minerals, though some add a scale inhibitor. RO removes most hardness, but hard water can also scale the RO membrane, so check the unit's hardness limit. AquaTru, for example, states a 10 grains per gallon limit, which many English homes exceed.
How much water does an under-sink reverse osmosis system waste?
+
Modern tankless units send roughly 1 litre to drain for every 2 or 3 litres of filtered water. The Waterdrop G3P600 is 2:1 and AquaTru says about 3 litres in gives 1 litre out. Older tank systems could waste far more. Some people collect the waste water for cleaning or plants.
Which under-sink filter is certified for lead?
+
Look for NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 listing lead for the exact model. The AquaTru Under Sink and Waterdrop G3P600 are IAPMO-certified for lead under NSF/ANSI 58. The Claryum 2-Stage is WQA-certified for lead under NSF/ANSI 53 but is a US import. Waterdrop's 10UA is only certified for chlorine taste.
How often do under-sink filter cartridges need changing?
+
Typically every 6 to 12 months for carbon cartridges, with RO membranes lasting about 2 years, depending on use and water quality. Hard water and sediment shorten life. Change them on schedule, as old cartridges can release trapped contaminants and grow bacteria.
