Beef Tallow for Cooking and Skin: What the research Says (2026)

Early researchLast reviewed By the Longer Living Guide editorial team

Quick answer

Beef tallow is a stable fat for occasional high-heat cooking, but it is about half saturated fat, so it is not a heart-healthy swap for olive or rapeseed oil. On skin it works as a thick occlusive for dry patches, but no clinical trials support claims it matches sebum or helps eczema, and it may not suit acne-prone skin.

Our picks

Best tallow balm to try

Hayes Meadow 50g Unscented Day & Night Tallow Skin Balm

Hayes Meadow

Early research
  • • 2 ingredients: organic tallow, rosehip oil
  • • Fragrance-free and essential-oil-free

Honest caveat: No clinical trial has tested tallow balms on skin, so any benefit is plausible (it is an occlusive fat, like other balms) rather than proven. Use within six months of opening, as natural fats can go rancid.

Good Phats Organic British Grass-Fed Beef Tallow 275g

Good Phats

Promising research
  • • Organic, British grass-fed beef fat
  • • Single ingredient

Honest caveat: Tallow is roughly half saturated fat, which raises LDL cholesterol; UK guidance is to keep saturated fat under 30g (men) or 20g (women) a day. ’Grass-fed’ here is not Pasture for Life certified, so the share of grass in the diet is not independently verified.

Promising research
  • • Certified organic, grass-fed and finished (brand statement; certifier not named on the product page)
  • • Rendered on the farm in Devon

Honest caveat: Delivery is charged on top of the £10.50 price, so it works out dearer than supermarket tallow unless you buy in bulk. The nutritional caveats of any saturated fat still apply.

Remnant Beauty

Early research
  • • Unscented version: grass-fed tallow and organic olive oil only
  • • Handmade in the UK

Honest caveat: Olive oil has been shown to weaken the skin barrier with repeated use in a small trial, so this is not our pick for eczema. The brand’s claims about repairing barrier damage and anti-ageing are not backed by published trials.

Early research
  • • Ingredients: grass-fed Irish tallow, extra-virgin olive oil, raw honey, beeswax
  • • No essential oils in this version

Honest caveat: Brand claims that tallow is ’the most effective natural moisturiser’ are not supported by trials. Beeswax and tallow make it heavy and occlusive, and it contains olive oil, which a small trial linked to barrier weakening.

What is beef tallow?

Tallow is rendered beef fat, usually from the hard fat around the kidneys (suet). Melted down and strained, it sets to a firm, creamy-white fat. It was the standard British frying fat for chips until the 1990s, and is now back in fashion both in the kitchen and, more surprisingly, in skincare balms sold as a "nose-to-tail" natural moisturiser.

What it claims

In the kitchen:

  1. It is a healthier, more "natural" alternative to seed oils.
  2. It has a high smoke point and does not break down when frying.
  3. Grass-fed tallow is rich in vitamins A, D, E and K.

On the skin:

  1. Its fat profile "matches human sebum", so it absorbs well and suits all skin.
  2. It repairs the skin barrier and helps eczema, rosacea and ageing skin.
  3. It is non-comedogenic (does not block pores).

Is cooking with beef tallow healthy?

Tallow is roughly half saturated fat, with most of the rest monounsaturated. Saturated fat raises LDL cholesterol, and the 2020 Cochrane review found that cutting saturated fat lowered cardiovascular events by 17% (Hooper et al. 2020). The NHS lists lard and dripping alongside butter as high in saturated fat and advises no more than 30g a day for men and 20g for women. A tablespoon of tallow is around 13g of fat, about half of it saturated.

That does not make tallow off limits. Roast potatoes in tallow once a week are a very different thing from swapping all your cooking oil for it. See our review of whether seed oils are bad for the other side of this debate.

Is tallow better for frying?

Partly true. Saturated and monounsaturated fats oxidise less than polyunsaturated oils like sunflower or corn oil, so tallow forms fewer aldehydes (breakdown products) during prolonged frying (Grootveld et al. 2021). That matters most for deep frying where oil is reused. For everyday pan frying, olive or rapeseed oil are also relatively stable and much lower in saturated fat.

Does grass-fed tallow have more vitamins?

Fat-soluble vitamins are present in beef fat, and grass-fed animals tend to have more beta-carotene (the yellow tint) and vitamin E. But the amounts in a spoonful of rendered fat are small compared with vegetables, oily fish and eggs, and we found no reliable UK data on vitamin levels in retail tallow. Treat vitamin claims on jars as marketing.

Does tallow really match human sebum?

Only loosely. Human sebum (skin oil) is mainly triglycerides and free fatty acids, plus wax esters and squalene, which are found almost nowhere else in the body (Picardo et al. 2009). Tallow is mostly triglycerides of palmitic, stearic and oleic acid. They share some fatty acids, as do many plant oils, but tallow lacks squalene and wax esters. "Biocompatible" is a fair description; "identical to sebum" is not.

Is tallow good for skin?

There are no published clinical trials testing tallow balms on eczema, rosacea, acne or skin ageing. What we can say:

  • As an occlusive, a thick fat that sits on the skin and slows water loss, tallow should help dry hands, heels, elbows and chapped lips, much like petroleum jelly, shea butter or a thick emollient.
  • For eczema, UK guidance favours tested emollients. Several tallow balms also contain olive oil, and a small controlled study found four weeks of olive oil weakened the skin barrier in adults with and without eczema history, while sunflower oil did not (Danby et al. 2013).
  • Fragrance is a real issue. Many popular balms add essential oils (lavender, ylang ylang, eucalyptus), which are common causes of contact allergy. If you try tallow, choose an unscented version.
  • Natural fats can go rancid, so use within the date or six months of opening.

Will tallow clog pores?

Possibly, for some people. Comedogenicity (pore-blocking) ratings mostly come from a rabbit-ear model developed in the 1970s and 1980s (Fulton 1984), which tends to over-predict effects in human skin, and tallow itself has not been properly tested. Thick occlusive balms are more likely to trigger breakouts in people who already get blackheads or acne, and even retailer Holland & Barrett notes it may not suit acne-prone skin.

Who might reasonably try it?

  • Cooks who want a traditional fat for roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings or occasional deep frying, and whose cholesterol is normal.
  • People with dry skin on the body, hands or lips who want a simple, fragrance-free balm with a short ingredient list.
  • Anyone wanting to use the whole animal: tallow is a by-product of beef farming.

Who should be careful?

  • High cholesterol, heart disease or type 2 diabetes: keep tallow occasional and talk to your GP or dietitian before switching cooking fats.
  • Oily, blackhead-prone or acne-prone skin: avoid on the face, or patch test on a small area of the jaw for two weeks first.
  • Eczema or very sensitive skin: stick with tested, fragrance-free emollients; if you try tallow, avoid versions with olive oil or essential oils.
  • Vegetarians, vegans and some faith groups: tallow is an animal product, and many balms also contain beeswax or honey.

If you want to try it: what to look for

For cooking: a single ingredient (beef tallow), British origin, and ideally organic or Pasture for Life certified if "grass fed" matters to you.

For skin: unscented, three or four ingredients at most, no essential oils, a dark glass jar, and a clear use-by period after opening.

How we chose

For cooking tallow we looked for a single ingredient and organic British beef. For balms we read every ingredient list and only included unscented versions with no essential oils, from UK or Irish makers with full ingredients published. We excluded balms with fragrance or eucalyptus. No balm has clinical trial evidence, so all are graded limited.

Good Phats Organic British Grass-Fed Beef Tallow

The easiest organic tallow to find, on the brand site and at Ocado and Waitrose. Single ingredient, organic British beef. Caveat: "grass-fed" is not Pasture for Life certified, so the share of grass in the diet is not independently checked, and it is still about half saturated fat.

Hayes Meadow Organic Tallow Jar

From a Devon farm that raises and renders its own cattle, sold in a 300g glass jar. Caveat: delivery is extra, and the certifier is not named on the product page.

Hayes Meadow 50g Unscented Day & Night Tallow Skin Balm

Our top skincare pick for a trial: just organic tallow and rosehip oil, no fragrance, at £9. Caveat: no clinical evidence; use within six months of opening; not for oily or acne-prone faces.

Remnant Beauty Tallow Balm Moisturiser, Unscented

Handmade in the UK from local grass-fed tallow with organic olive oil. Caveat: the olive oil makes it a less good choice for eczema, and the scented versions add essential oils, so choose unscented.

Ancestral Cosmetics Unscented Tallow & Honey Balm

The most reviewed tallow balm in UK search results, made in Ireland. The unscented version drops the essential oil blend. Caveat: heavy and occlusive, contains olive oil, honey and beeswax, and the brand's claims are not backed by trials.

Bottom line

Beef tallow is a good traditional cooking fat for occasional high-heat use, not a health food, and not a better everyday choice than olive or rapeseed oil. On skin it is a reasonable fragrance-free occlusive for dry body areas, but claims that it matches sebum, repairs the barrier or helps eczema and ageing have no trial evidence. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, keep it off your face.

Frequently asked questions

Is beef tallow healthier than vegetable oil?

+

For heart health, no. Tallow is roughly half saturated fat, which raises LDL cholesterol, and Cochrane reviews link cutting saturated fat to fewer cardiovascular events. Tallow is more stable for repeated deep frying than sunflower or corn oil, so it has a place for occasional use, but olive or rapeseed oil are better everyday choices.

Is tallow good for your face?

+

It can soften dry skin because it is a thick, occlusive fat, but there are no clinical trials of tallow balms on facial skin. People with oily, blackhead-prone or acne-prone skin are more likely to get breakouts from heavy balms. If you want to try it, use an unscented balm and patch test on a small area for two weeks.

Does tallow clog pores?

+

It may for some people. Tallow has not been properly tested for comedogenicity in humans, and older ratings come from a rabbit-ear model that tends to over-predict. As a thick occlusive it is more likely to block pores on oily or acne-prone skin than on dry skin. Keep it to body areas if you are breakout-prone.

Does tallow really match human sebum?

+

Only loosely. Human sebum contains triglycerides and fatty acids, plus wax esters and squalene that tallow lacks. Tallow shares some fatty acids with sebum, as many plant oils do. Describing it as compatible with skin is fair, but saying it is identical to sebum oversimplifies the chemistry.

Is tallow balm good for eczema?

+

There is no trial evidence it helps eczema. Many tallow balms add essential oils, which can trigger contact allergy, and several contain olive oil, which a small controlled study linked to weakening the skin barrier. For eczema, tested fragrance-free emollients recommended by your GP or pharmacist remain the evidence-backed choice.

What is the smoke point of beef tallow?

+

Tallow is often quoted as having a smoke point around 200°C, similar to many refined oils, and its mostly saturated and monounsaturated fats resist oxidation during frying. In practice the bigger factor is not overheating any fat until it smokes, and not reusing deep-frying fat many times.
