Best Organic Cotton Underwear UK (2026): GOTS Picks for Women and Men

Promising researchLast reviewed By the Longer Living Guide editorial team

Quick answer

The best organic cotton underwear in the UK carries a GOTS certificate, which independently checks organic fibre and bans many processing chemicals. Organic Basics Core Briefs (£13) show their certificate; Thought is the budget option from £7.95. Bamboo underwear is usually viscose, a chemically processed fibre, so it is not a like-for-like swap.

Is organic cotton underwear worth it?

Underwear sits against some of the most sensitive skin you have, all day, every day. That makes it a sensible place to start if you want fewer unknowns in your wardrobe. Organic cotton on its own does not make a garment better for your skin, but a GOTS label is one of the few textile claims that is independently checked from field to finished product. GOTS (the Global Organic Textile Standard) requires at least 70% certified organic fibre (95% for the "organic" label grade), bans a long list of dyes and finishing chemicals, sets limits on residues and audits every factory in the chain.

What it does not do is test the product on skin or promise any health outcome. Think of it as a strong check on how the fabric was made, rather than a medical claim.

How we chose

We looked for underwear and simple basics sold on a live UK website in pounds, then checked each product page for fibre content and any certificate. We gave the top grade (Strong) only where a named certificate was visible for that product. Brands that say "organic" without showing a certificate got Promising. Bamboo and modal options are included because people often ask about them, but they are graded Early because the fibre is chemically processed and none showed a product-level certificate. We did not accept "non-toxic" marketing as evidence, and no brand paid to be included.

What are the best organic cotton knickers and bras?

Organic Basics Core Briefs: best overall

A plain mid-rise brief in 95% organic cotton with a cotton gusset. The UK product page names its GOTS certificate (Control Union, GOTS-20447), which is exactly what you want to see. At £13 a pair it is mid-priced, and it was often discounted when we checked. Caveat: 5% elastane, so not pure cotton.

Thought Organic Cotton High Waisted Jersey Brief: budget pick

At £7.95 this is the cheapest organic cotton brief we found from a UK brand. It is a simple high-waisted jersey knicker in 95% organic cotton. Caveat: GOTS is mentioned only in the image file names, not in the product text, so treat the certification as likely rather than confirmed. Thought's old web address now redirects to thoughtsocks.com.

Komodo Anastasia Organic Cotton Bra

A light-support soft bra in 95% organic cotton, listed by UK retailer Yogamatters as a GOTS certified product, for £14. It is comfortable for lounging and gentle yoga. Caveat: not suitable for larger cups or running, and we could not see a certificate number.

What is the best organic cotton underwear for men?

Organic Basics Core Trunks 3-Pack

Close-fitting trunks in 95% organic cotton, £38.40 for three when we checked. Caveat: the page mentions "Real Cool" and "ReaLasting" cotton treatments without saying what they are. If you want the plainest possible fabric, ask the brand what these finishes involve.

Thought Kenny Organic Cotton Jersey Boxer Shorts

A single pair of 95% organic cotton jersey boxers for £14.95, handy for testing fit. Caveat: like Thought's women's range, the GOTS reference sits in image names rather than product text.

What about everyday organic clothing basics?

Underwear is the easy win, but t-shirts and vests are worn just as close to the skin. Look for the same thing: a GOTS claim, ideally with a certificate number, and as little elastane as you can live with.

Lucy & Yak Denver Organic Cotton T-Shirt

A regular-fit crew neck in 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton for around £14, with no elastane. Caveat: prints and colours change often, and printed designs add inks (GOTS does regulate these, but we saw no certificate number).

Other names worth knowing: Organic Basics also makes GOTS organic cotton tees from about £29, and People Tree is a long-standing Fair Trade and organic cotton brand, though we could not verify a current product page for this guide. Pact, a US brand known for organic cotton basics, does not run a UK store, so we have left it out.

Is bamboo underwear organic? What about modal?

This is where marketing gets slippery. Almost all "bamboo" underwear is viscose (rayon) made from bamboo. The bamboo pulp is dissolved with chemicals (traditionally carbon disulfide and caustic soda) and spun back into a fibre. The result is very soft, but it is a regenerated, chemically processed fibre, not a natural one, and any "organic bamboo" growing claim does not survive that process. Carbon disulfide exposure is a well-documented occupational health issue for viscose workers, which is a factory concern rather than a wearer concern.

Boody Classic Bikini

Very soft and seam-free, £13. Caveat: 79% bamboo viscose, 15% nylon and 6% elastane, with no OEKO-TEX or GOTS claim on the page.

BAM Regular Fitted Air Bamboo Boxers 3 Pack

A cool, stretchy trunk for warm weather and sport, £39 for three. Caveat: 68% bamboo viscose with 28% organic cotton and 4% elastane, so only partly organic.

Stripe & Stare The Original Knicker Four Pack

Made from TENCEL Modal, a wood-based fibre produced by Lenzing in a more controlled closed-loop process than generic viscose. £50 for four. Caveat: not organic, no certificate shown, and the full fibre breakdown (including the lace) is not listed.

What the evidence says

  • Organic farming: GOTS mainly benefits farmers, water and soil by banning synthetic pesticides and controlling processing chemicals. Evidence that organic cotton underwear changes anything measurable for the wearer is thin, so we grade the material choice rather than promising a skin benefit.
  • Chemical residues: Both GOTS and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 test finished textiles against limits for substances such as formaldehyde, certain dyes and heavy metals. OEKO-TEX does not require organic fibre, so a conventional cotton brief with OEKO-TEX can still be a reasonable choice.
  • Synthetics: Polyester can release small amounts of antimony (a catalyst residue) into artificial sweat in lab tests. Levels found are low and the real-world relevance is unclear, but it is one reason some people prefer cotton next to skin.
  • Sensitive skin: Cotton is breathable and absorbent, which many people with eczema find comfortable, but there is no good trial showing organic cotton is better than conventional cotton for skin conditions. If you have a skin condition, the NHS and your GP are the right places for treatment advice.

What to avoid

  • "Non-toxic" or "chemical-free" claims with no certificate behind them.
  • "Organic bamboo" underwear sold as natural: check the label for "viscose" or "rayon".
  • Antibacterial or "odour control" finishes, which often use silver or other biocides that GOTS restricts.
  • Heavy elastane or nylon blends if your aim is a mostly natural fabric.

Bottom line

For most people, a GOTS-certified organic cotton brief or trunk with a small amount of elastane is the simplest swap, and Organic Basics Core Briefs are our top pick because the certificate is shown. Thought is the budget route at under £8 a pair. Bamboo and modal feel lovely but are processed fibres, so buy them for comfort, not because they are more natural.

Frequently asked questions

Is organic cotton underwear better for your health?

+

There is no good evidence that organic cotton underwear improves health compared with conventional cotton. What GOTS certification does guarantee is that the fibre was grown without synthetic pesticides and processed under strict chemical rules, with residue limits on the finished product. It is a strong check on how the fabric was made rather than a health claim.

What does GOTS certified mean on underwear?

+

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) means at least 70% certified organic fibre, or 95% for products labelled organic, and every processing site has been audited. It bans many dyes and finishing chemicals, limits residues and includes social criteria for workers. Look for a certificate or licence number on the label or product page to be sure.

Is bamboo underwear organic?

+

Usually not in any meaningful sense. Most bamboo underwear is viscose or rayon, where bamboo pulp is dissolved with chemicals and spun into a new fibre. Even if the bamboo was grown organically, the finished fabric is a processed regenerated fibre. It is very soft, but check the label for the words viscose or rayon.

Does organic cotton underwear contain elastane?

+

Most does. Typical blends are 95% organic cotton with 5% elastane so the fabric keeps its shape. GOTS allows a small share of non-organic fibre for this reason. If you want 100% cotton, look for woven boxers or specialist brands, and expect a looser fit that may stretch out more with wear.

Is OEKO-TEX the same as organic?

+

No. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests the finished textile for a long list of harmful substances against set limits, but it does not require organic fibre or audit farming. GOTS covers organic growing and processing as well as residues. Both are useful; GOTS is the stricter label if organic fibre matters to you.

How often should you replace underwear?

+

There is no official rule, but most people replace underwear every six to twelve months, or sooner if elastic goes, fabric thins or holes appear. Washing at 40 to 60°C is fine for cotton and helps hygiene. Organic cotton wears in a similar way to conventional cotton of the same weight.
