Best Olive Oil UK (2026): High-Polyphenol Picks and How to Read Labels
Quick answer
The best olive oil for health is a fresh extra virgin oil with a stated polyphenol level of around 250 mg/kg or more, the threshold for the EU health claim. In the PREDIMED trial an extra virgin olive oil rich Mediterranean diet cut heart events by about 30%. Ultra-high levels have no extra proven benefit.
Our picks
Citizens of Soil Greek Extra Virgin Olive Oil (500ml)
Citizens of Soil
- • 434 mg/kg polyphenols stated
- • Harvest date on page
Honest caveat: Polyphenols fall over time once opened and with age, so the figure is a snapshot. The figure is published by the brand, not an independent lab report.

Odysea x Kew High Polyphenol Extra Virgin Olive Oil (500ml)
Odysea
- • Minimum 250 mg/kg polyphenols
- • Greek oil
Honest caveat: 250 mg/kg is a minimum, not a measured figure for your batch. No harvest date is shown on the listing.

Olivea Ultra High Phenolic Extra Virgin Olive Oil (500ml)
Olivea
- • 1,000+ mg/kg polyphenols
- • Published harvest lab results
Honest caveat: Evidence for benefit comes from olive oils at 250 to 400 mg/kg; there is no trial showing 1,000 mg/kg is better than that. Very bitter and peppery. Lab results are commissioned by the brand.

Morrisons The Best Signature Manzanilla Extra Virgin Olive Oil (500ml)
Morrisons
- • Single variety
- • Budget price
Honest caveat: No polyphenol figure or harvest date is given. Supermarket oils can sit on shelves under bright lights, which reduces freshness.

Honest Toil Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil (500ml)
Honest Toil
- • Single village, unblended

Belazu Early Harvest Arbequina Extra Virgin Olive Oil (1L)
Belazu

Belazu Verdemanda Extra Virgin Olive Oil (500ml)
Belazu
- • Early-picked Arbequina

Why extra virgin olive oil?
Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is pressed from olives without heat or chemical refining, so it keeps natural plant compounds called polyphenols, such as hydroxytyrosol, oleuropein and oleocanthal (the compound that gives a peppery catch in the throat). Refined 'light' or plain olive oils lose most of them.
What the evidence says
| Claim | Evidence grade | Best evidence |
|---|---|---|
| EVOO-rich Mediterranean diet lowers heart attack and stroke risk | Strong | PREDIMED, NEJM 2018 |
| Higher olive oil intake linked to longer life | Promising | US cohorts, 28 years |
| Higher polyphenol oil improves cholesterol markers more | Promising | EUROLIVE trial |
| Olive oil polyphenols protect blood fats from oxidation | Strong (authorised claim) | EU Regulation 432/2012 |
| Ultra-high polyphenol oils (1,000+ mg/kg) work better | Early | No direct trials |
PREDIMED
The PREDIMED trial randomly assigned 7,447 Spanish adults at high heart risk to a Mediterranean diet with extra EVOO (about a litre a week per household), a Mediterranean diet with nuts, or a low-fat control diet. Major cardiovascular events were about 30% lower in the EVOO group (hazard ratio 0.69). The trial was republished in 2018 after problems with randomisation at some sites; results held when those participants were removed. It tested a whole diet, not oil alone.
Long-term cohort data
A Harvard analysis of over 90,000 US adults followed for 28 years found that people consuming more than half a tablespoon a day had a 19% lower risk of death than those who rarely used it. Replacing butter, margarine or mayonnaise with olive oil was linked to lower risk. This is observational, so it shows association, not proof.
Does polyphenol content matter?
The EUROLIVE trial gave 200 healthy men 25ml a day of olive oils with low (2.7 mg/kg), medium (164 mg/kg) or high (366 mg/kg) polyphenols. HDL ('good') cholesterol rose and oxidative damage markers fell more as polyphenol content rose. Based on this kind of evidence, EFSA backed a health claim, now in Regulation 432/2012: olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress, but only for oils with at least 5mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives per 20g, roughly 250 mg/kg, eaten at 20g (about 1.5 tablespoons) a day.

How we chose
We favoured oils that publish a polyphenol figure or minimum, a harvest date, origin and variety, sold in dark glass or tins. We included cheaper everyday EVOOs because the biggest evidence comes from using extra virgin olive oil instead of other fats, not from chasing the highest number. Prices were checked at brand sites, Healf, Kew and Morrisons.
How to read an olive oil label
- Extra virgin: the only grade that keeps meaningful polyphenols.
- Harvest date: fresher is better; polyphenols fall over 12 to 18 months and faster once opened.
- Polyphenol figure: look for mg/kg and the test date. 250 mg/kg or more meets the EU claim level.
- Variety: Koroneiki, Coratina and Picual tend to be higher; Arbequina is milder and lower.
- Packaging: dark glass or tins protect from light. Avoid clear bottles under shop lights.
- Taste: bitterness and a peppery throat catch are signs of polyphenols.
Our picks in detail
Citizens of Soil Greek EVOO: best overall
Koroneiki oil from Sparta with a stated 434 mg/kg polyphenols (tested February 2026) and a December 2025 harvest date. In the range used in the best trials, at a fair price, with refill pouches. Caveat: the figure is published by the brand and will fall with age.
Odysea x Kew High Polyphenol EVOO: best value high-polyphenol
Greek oil with a stated minimum of 250 mg/kg, in line with the EU claim threshold, and your purchase supports Kew. Caveat: a minimum, not a batch figure, and no harvest date on the listing.
Olivea Ultra High Phenolic EVOO: best lab-verified premium
Sold as 1,000+ mg/kg, with harvest lab results published online. Caveat: no trial shows benefit beyond about 400 mg/kg, and it is very bitter. Lab reports are commissioned by the brand.
Honest Toil Cold Pressed EVOO: best unfiltered
Unblended Koroneiki from one Greek village, pressed the day it is picked, with low acidity. Caveat: no polyphenol figure, and unfiltered oil should be used within months.
Belazu Verdemanda and Early Harvest: best Spanish options
Early-picked Arbequina from a well-regarded UK importer; the litre Early Harvest is good value for cooking. Caveat: no polyphenol figures, and Arbequina is naturally milder.
Morrisons The Best Manzanilla EVOO: best budget
A single-variety extra virgin oil at a supermarket price, ideal for daily cooking. Caveat: no polyphenol figure or harvest date.
How much does a high-polyphenol oil really cost per day?
At the EU claim amount of 20g (about 1.5 tablespoons) a day, a 500ml bottle lasts around three and a half weeks. That works out at roughly 25p a day for Morrisons The Best, about 65p a day for Odysea x Kew or Honest Toil, about 75p a day for Citizens of Soil and around £1.45 a day for Olivea. For most people, the best plan is a good everyday extra virgin oil for cooking plus a higher-polyphenol bottle for drizzling over salads, vegetables and bread.
What to avoid
- Paying premium prices for 'high polyphenol' without a figure or test date.
- Drinking shots of oil as a supplement: it adds about 120 calories a tablespoon and has not been tested that way.
- Olive oil capsules or extracts marketed with the claim: the evidence is for oil used in food.
- Leaving bottles by the hob or in sunlight.
Bottom line
The proven move is swapping butter and other fats for extra virgin olive oil, around one and a half to two tablespoons a day. A fresh, well-labelled oil around 250 to 450 mg/kg, such as Citizens of Soil or Odysea x Kew, gives you the polyphenol level backed by research without paying for numbers no trial has tested.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a high polyphenol olive oil?
+
There is no legal definition, but the EU olive oil polyphenol health claim requires at least 5mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives per 20g of oil, roughly 250 mg/kg. Many specialist oils sit between 300 and 600 mg/kg. Look for a stated figure, the test method and the date it was measured, as levels fall over time.
Is more polyphenol always better?
+
Not on current evidence. Trials such as EUROLIVE showed benefits with oils around 366 mg/kg compared with very low polyphenol oils. No trials show that 1,000 mg/kg oils give extra health benefits, and they are much more bitter and expensive. A fresh, well-stored oil above 250 mg/kg is a sensible target.
Can I cook with extra virgin olive oil?
+
Yes. Extra virgin olive oil is stable for normal home cooking such as sauteing and roasting, partly because its polyphenols protect it. Some polyphenols are lost with heat, so many people use a cheaper extra virgin oil for cooking and save a premium high-polyphenol oil for drizzling on finished dishes and salads.
How much olive oil should I have a day?
+
The EU health claim is based on 20g, about one and a half tablespoons, a day. PREDIMED households used around a litre of extra virgin olive oil a week. Olive oil is energy dense, at about 120 calories per tablespoon, so the benefit comes from replacing other fats rather than adding oil on top.
How long does olive oil stay fresh?
+
Polyphenols and flavour decline over 12 to 18 months from harvest, and faster once the bottle is opened. Buy oil with a recent harvest date, choose dark glass or tins, store it away from heat and light, and aim to use an opened bottle within two to three months.
Does supermarket extra virgin olive oil count?
+
Yes. Most of the long-term evidence comes from people using ordinary extra virgin olive oil. Supermarket oils rarely state polyphenol levels or harvest dates, so they may be lower, but swapping butter or other fats for any extra virgin olive oil is the change with the strongest backing.
