Best Cooling Mattress Toppers and Bedding UK (2026): What Keeps You Cooler

Early researchLast reviewed By the Longer Living Guide editorial team

Quick answer

For most UK hot sleepers, a breathable wool topper such as the John Lewis Natural Collection British Wool topper (from £85) is the best-value way to sleep cooler, because wool handles moisture well. Simba's foam-and-spring Hybrid Topper adds airflow. Only powered systems like Eight Sleep Pod 6 (£2,499) actively cool, and their evidence is mostly company-run.

John Lewis

Promising research
  • • 100% wool filling
  • • 233 thread count cotton cover

Honest caveat: The page does not list fill weight or certifications. Evidence that wool bedding improves sleep is limited; one small study found wool sleepwear helped but bedding fabric made no difference.

Woolroom

Promising research
  • • 1,000 gsm traceable British wool
  • • Unbleached organic cotton cover

Honest caveat: When we checked, the page showed sizes as sold out with a ’notify me’ option, so check stock. Wool’s sleep benefits come from small, partly wool-industry-funded studies.

Early research
  • • Foam plus micro-spring layer for airflow
  • • CertiPUR-verified foams (brand statement)

Honest caveat: Still a foam product, so it holds more heat than wool or cotton layers. £299 is for a single; a king is £399.

Early research
  • • Simba’s cooler-running foam
  • • Anti-slip base

Honest caveat: Simba’s coolness claims rest on its own commissioned tests comparing foams, not on sleep outcomes. Foam can smell when new; air it out.

Early research
  • • Actively cools or heats each side, 12°C to 43°C (brand)
  • • £2,499 plus £299 a year Autopilot

Honest caveat: £2,499 for the Pod 6 Standard, plus Autopilot at £299 a year (or £25 a month) shown at checkout. It uses a hub, water and electricity, collects sleep data, and its published studies are largely company-run.

Why does temperature matter for sleep?

Your core body temperature drops as you fall asleep, and your body sheds heat through the skin, especially hands and feet. If the bed traps heat and moisture, that process is harder and you wake more. A review in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology concluded that the bed's microclimate (the warmth and humidity between you and the covers) is a key factor, and that heat exposure increases wakefulness. In a 2023 study of older adults tracked at home, sleep was most efficient when the bedroom was about 20 to 25°C, with a 5 to 10% drop in sleep efficiency as it warmed from 25 to 30°C, and big differences between people.

The NHS recommends a cool bedroom. That means the first fixes are free: a lighter duvet in summer, a window or fan, and cotton or linen sheets.

What do "cooling" toppers actually do?

There are three types, and they work differently:

  1. Natural fibre toppers (wool, cotton). These do not feel cold, but wool absorbs and releases moisture vapour, which can keep the bed drier. A small study of 17 young adults found falling asleep was quicker in wool sleepwear than cotton at 17°C, but bedding fabric made no difference. Two authors worked for the wool industry body, so treat it as Early.
  2. "Cool" foams and gel foams. These feel cool to the touch at first and may hold less heat than older memory foam. Most evidence is manufacturer lab testing, not sleep studies.
  3. Active systems (Eight Sleep). Water is pumped through a cover to cool or heat it. These genuinely change bed temperature, but published studies are largely company-funded.

How we chose

  • Mix of natural fibre, foam and active options, from £85 to £2,499.
  • UK prices verified on live pages in October 2026.
  • Preference for third-party textile or foam certification (OEKO-TEX, CertiPUR) where listed.
  • Honest notes on stock and marketing claims.

John Lewis Natural Collection British Wool Mattress Topper: best value

This wool topper has 100% wool filling and a 233 thread count cotton cover, from £85 (single) to £125. It adds a breathable layer between you and a foam mattress without adding foam. Caveat: the page does not list fill weight or certifications, and wool toppers are thin and fairly firm, so they will not soften a hard mattress much.

Woolroom Deluxe Wool Mattress Topper: certified wool

Woolroom's Deluxe topper uses 1,000 gsm of traceable British wool in an unbleached organic cotton cover, and lists OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1 (lab tested for harmful substances to the baby-article limits) and an Allergy UK Seal of Approval. From £131.99 for a single. Caveat: when we checked, sizes were showing as sold out with a "notify me" button, so stock may be limited.

Simba Hybrid Mattress Topper: best foam option

The Simba Hybrid Topper (from £299, 6.5 cm) layers foams over thousands of micro-springs, which leave air channels that solid foam lacks. Simba says its foams are CertiPUR verified, meaning tested for certain heavy metals, some flame retardants and emissions. Caveat: it is still foam, so it runs warmer than wool, and a king is £399.

Simba Cool Foam Mattress Topper: cheaper foam

The Cool Foam Topper (from £149) uses Simba's own foam, which the brand says holds less heat than conventional memory foam, plus an anti-slip base. Caveat: Simba's comparisons come from tests it commissioned, not sleep trials. Air new foam for a day or two.

Panda Bamboo Mattress Topper: mid-price memory foam

Panda's 5 cm topper (from £99.95) uses memory foam with cooling gel capsules and a bamboo-derived cover. Caveat: gel mostly changes how the surface feels at first; memory foam still holds heat over a full night. "Bamboo" covers are usually viscose.

Eight Sleep Pod 6: active cooling, at a price

The Eight Sleep Pod 6 is a 1-inch cover over your mattress, connected to a hub that cools or heats each side from 12°C to 43°C (brand figures). It is the only product here that actively changes temperature, which helps couples who disagree. Caveat: £2,499 for the Standard plus Autopilot at £299 a year or £25 a month as shown at checkout; it uses water and power, collects sleep data, and most of its evidence comes from the company.

What should I try before buying a topper?

Most of what helps hot sleepers costs little or nothing:

  • Cool the room in the evening. Close curtains on the sunny side during the day, then open windows (if it is secure and quiet enough) once the outside air is cooler than inside. A fan pointed across the bed helps sweat evaporate.
  • Swap the duvet by season. A 4.5 tog summer duvet, or just a cotton sheet on hot nights, makes a bigger difference than any topper. Couples who disagree can use two single duvets on one bed.
  • Choose breathable sheets and nightwear. Cotton percale, linen, or no nightwear at all. Polyester traps moisture.
  • Watch the evening routine. Alcohol and heavy late meals raise body temperature and make night waking more likely. A warm (not hot) shower an hour or two before bed helps the body shed heat afterwards.
  • Check the mattress. Older all-foam mattresses hold a lot of heat. If you are replacing anyway, a pocket-sprung mattress with natural fibre layers usually sleeps cooler.

If these do not help, a breathable topper is the next step.

What to avoid

  • Thick memory foam toppers if you already sleep hot. They mould to you and reduce airflow.
  • Polyester duvets and sheets in summer. Choose cotton percale (a crisp, flat weave) or linen.
  • Heavy weighted blankets on hot nights. They trap heat.
  • For babies: do not add toppers, pillows or extra layers in a cot. The Lullaby Trust recommends a room temperature of 16 to 20°C and light bedding or a well-fitting sleep bag.

Who should be careful?

If you have new or drenching night sweats, especially with weight loss or fever, see your GP rather than changing bedding. Menopause hot flushes are common and worth discussing with a GP too, as treatments exist.

Bottom line

Start free: a cooler room, a lighter duvet and cotton or linen sheets. If you still sleep hot, a wool topper (John Lewis from £85, or Woolroom if you want certified materials) adds a breathable layer without foam. Choose Simba's Hybrid if you need cushioning. Eight Sleep genuinely cools but costs the price of a holiday every year once you add the subscription.

Frequently asked questions

Do cooling mattress toppers really work?

+

It depends on the type. Gel and 'cool' foams feel cool to the touch at first, but most evidence is manufacturer testing rather than sleep studies. Wool handles moisture well and suits hot sleepers. Only active systems like Eight Sleep change bed temperature, and their studies are largely company-funded. A cooler room is the proven first step.

What is the best bedroom temperature for sleep?

+

There is no single number. A 2023 study of older adults found sleep was most efficient around 20 to 25°C, with sleep worsening as rooms got hotter, and big differences between people. For babies, the Lullaby Trust recommends 16 to 20°C. Many adults find a slightly cool room with a light duvet works best.

Is wool or memory foam better for hot sleepers?

+

Wool is usually better for hot sleepers because it is breathable and absorbs moisture vapour, while memory foam moulds closely to your body and holds heat. Memory foam gives more cushioning, so if you need pressure relief, a foam topper with springs or air channels, such as Simba's Hybrid, is a compromise.

Is Eight Sleep worth it in the UK?

+

For most people, no. The Pod 6 costs £2,499 plus £299 a year for Autopilot. It does actively cool and heat each side of the bed, which can help couples with very different needs or people who sleep extremely hot. Try cheaper fixes first: a cooler room, lighter duvet and breathable bedding.

What sheets are coolest for summer?

+

Cotton percale and linen are the coolest common choices. Percale is a flat, crisp weave that lets air through, and linen is breathable and dries quickly. Sateen and brushed cotton feel warmer, and polyester blends trap heat. Look for OEKO-TEX Standard 100 if you want independent testing for harmful substances.

Can a mattress topper help with menopause night sweats?

+

A breathable topper and cotton or linen bedding may make night sweats more bearable, but they will not stop them. Keep the room cool, use layers you can throw off, and speak to your GP about hot flushes, as treatments including HRT and non-hormonal options are available. New drenching sweats need a GP check.
