Best Glass and Stainless Steel Water Bottles UK (2026): Plastic-Free Picks
Quick answer
The best plastic-free water bottles let your drink touch only steel, glass or silicone. Our top pick is the Klean Kanteen Reflect (steel, bamboo and silicone, £30). For glass, choose the Black+Blum Glass Water Bottle; for hot drinks, the Klean Kanteen Rise Reflect. Most other bottles have plastic lids, so check before you buy.
Our picks

Klean Kanteen Reflect Bottle 800ml
Klean Kanteen
- • Steel, bamboo and silicone only, no plastic
- • Unpainted 18/8 stainless steel
Honest caveat: The silicone gasket in the cap is a polymer, though not a plastic in the usual sense, and the bamboo top needs hand washing and drying to stay in good condition. No independent migration testing is published for this model.
Klean Kanteen

Black+Blum Glass Water Bottle 600ml
Black+Blum
- • Borosilicate glass body
- • Stainless steel lid, glass and steel contact only
Honest caveat: Glass can break even with the protective sleeve, and the sleeve itself is a non-slip material the brand does not name. The brand warns to hand-tighten the lid only.
Black+Blum

Klean Kanteen Rise Reflect Insulated Bottle 592ml
Klean Kanteen
- • No plastic in bottle or cap
- • Brand states silica/glass vacuum plug, no lead
Honest caveat: Insulated bottles are heavier and pricier than single-wall ones, and the bamboo cap is hand wash only. The lead-free claim is the brand’s own statement; we have not seen third-party test data for this model.
Klean Kanteen

Black+Blum Steel Bottle 600ml
Black+Blum
- • Under £15
- • Brand states full steel liquid contact
Honest caveat: The outer lid is polypropylene (the product image name says PP lid), even though the liquid side is steel. Single-wall steel gets condensation and warms up quickly.
Black+Blum

Black+Blum Explorer Bottle Large 850ml
Black+Blum
- • Plastic-free contact lid (brand)
- • Cold 24h, hot 12h
Honest caveat: Black+Blum does not say on the page how the vacuum is sealed, so we cannot confirm whether a lead sealing dot is used under the base cover. The outer lid parts are not fully described.
Black+Blum

Chilly’s Original Water Bottle 500ml
Chilly's
- • Stainless steel body
- • BPA-free plastic lid (type not named)
Honest caveat: Chilly’s lists only a ’BPA free lid’ and does not name the lid plastic or say how the vacuum is sealed, so we cannot confirm whether a lead sealing dot is used. It is also not dishwasher-proof according to the brand.
Chilly's

Ocean Bottle Original 500ml
Ocean Bottle
- • Recycled stainless steel body
- • Lid uses BPA-free plastic and silicone
Honest caveat: The listed materials include BPA-free plastic and silicone, and the brand does not say which parts touch your drink or how the vacuum is sealed. Prices vary by colour, from £28 to £40 for 500ml.

What is the best glass or stainless steel water bottle in the UK?
For most people, the best reusable bottle is one where your water touches only stainless steel, glass or a small silicone seal. On that test our top pick is the Klean Kanteen Reflect (steel, bamboo and silicone, no plastic at all), the best glass option is the Black+Blum Glass Water Bottle, and the best insulated plastic-free bottle is the Klean Kanteen Rise Reflect. If budget is tight, the Black+Blum Steel Bottle gives full steel contact for under £15.
Most "plastic-free" bottles are not fully plastic-free. The body is steel or glass, but the lid, straw or spout is usually polypropylene, Tritan or silicone. That matters less for cold water than for hot drinks, but if you are switching to cut plastic contact, the lid is where to look.

How we chose
We looked at what actually touches your drink, not what the marketing says. We favoured bottles where the brand states the liquid contacts only steel, glass or silicone, and we checked whether brands say how insulated bottles are sealed. We gave extra credit for clear material lists, published lead statements and replaceable parts. No bottle here has published independent migration testing, so the best grade we give is moderate: the materials are well supported, but the individual products have not been lab tested for what leaches into water. Prices were checked on brand sites in October 2026.
Is glass or stainless steel better for a water bottle?
Both are good choices, and both are far lower exposure than a plastic bottle used again and again.
Glass is inert (it does not react with drinks), shows dirt clearly and never tastes metallic. Borosilicate glass handles temperature changes better than ordinary soda-lime glass. The downsides are weight and breakage.
Stainless steel is tough, light and can be insulated. Look for 18/8 (also called 304) steel, which is 18% chromium and 8% nickel, as Klean Kanteen explains. Small amounts of nickel and chromium can migrate from steel into acidic liquids, which mostly matters for cooking acidic food for long periods and for people with a nickel allergy. Plain water in a steel bottle is a low-exposure choice.
Plastic bottles are the comparison point. A 2024 study in PNAS estimated about 240,000 micro and nanoplastic particles per litre of bottled water, around 90% of them nanoplastics. Older reusable polycarbonate bottles may contain BPA, which EFSA notes is used in polycarbonate and which the European Commission banned from food contact materials in December 2024.
Do stainless steel bottles contain lead?
This is the question behind the 2024 Stanley cup headlines, so it is worth being precise. Some vacuum-insulated bottles and cups are sealed with a small pellet containing lead, placed on the outer base and covered with a steel cap. The lead is outside the inner wall, so it does not touch your drink. As Nebraska Medicine explains, the realistic exposure risk comes if the base cap is damaged and the seal is exposed, for example after a bad drop, and then touched or chewed (a particular worry with children).
What we found:
- Klean Kanteen states that all its products are lead-free and that it seals vacuum bottles with a silica/glass plug instead (FAQ).
- Chilly's, Ocean Bottle and Black+Blum do not say on their product pages how the vacuum is sealed. That does not mean they use lead; it means we could not confirm either way.
- Single-wall bottles (not insulated) have no vacuum seal, so the question does not arise.
If a lead-free seal matters to you, choose a single-wall bottle or a brand that states its sealing method. If an insulated bottle's base cap comes off, stop using it.
Our picks
Klean Kanteen Reflect 800ml: best overall
The Reflect is made from just three materials: unpainted stainless steel, bamboo and food-grade silicone, with no paint and no plastic. Your water touches steel and a silicone seal only. At 800ml it suits a full working day.
Honest caveat: it is single-wall, so it will not keep drinks hot or cold for long, and the bamboo top needs hand washing and drying.
Black+Blum Glass Water Bottle 600ml: best glass bottle
Black+Blum's glass bottle pairs a borosilicate glass body with a stainless steel lid, and the brand states water has full glass and steel contact. The protective sleeve and carry loop make it more practical than most glass bottles.
Honest caveat: glass can still break, the sleeve material is not named, and the brand says to hand-tighten the lid only.
Klean Kanteen Rise Reflect 592ml: best insulated, plastic-free
The Rise Reflect is the insulated version of the Reflect: 90% recycled 18/8 steel, bamboo and silicone. Klean Kanteen says its vacuum bottles use a silica/glass plug rather than lead.
Honest caveat: the lead-free claim is the brand's statement, not third-party test data, and at 592ml it is smaller than many people want.
Black+Blum Steel Bottle 600ml: best budget
At £14.95, the Steel Bottle is the cheapest we found where the brand states full steel liquid contact and no plastic touching the water. It fits bike cages and car cup holders.
Honest caveat: the outer lid is polypropylene, and as a single-wall bottle it sweats with cold drinks and warms quickly.
Black+Blum Explorer Bottle Large 850ml: large insulated option
The Explorer holds 850ml, keeps drinks cold for 24 hours, and Black+Blum describes its lid as a plastic-free contact lid.
Honest caveat: the brand does not say how the vacuum is sealed, so we cannot rule a lead sealing dot in or out.
Chilly's Original 500ml: also consider
Chilly's is the UK's best-known insulated bottle, with a stainless steel body and good insulation. It is included because many readers already own one.
Honest caveat: the lid is plastic, described only as "BPA free", and Chilly's does not disclose its vacuum sealing method.
Ocean Bottle Original 500ml: also consider
Ocean Bottle uses recycled stainless steel, offers a 10-year warranty and funds ocean-bound plastic collection.
Honest caveat: the listed materials include BPA-free plastic and silicone without saying which parts touch the drink, and the sealing method is not stated.
What to avoid
- Old polycarbonate bottles, often hard, clear and marked recycling code 7. These may contain BPA (EFSA).
- Single-use plastic bottles refilled for weeks, which were not designed for repeated use and wear over time.
- Hot drinks in bottles with plastic straws or spouts. Heat increases migration from plastics, so keep plastic lid parts for cold water.
- Insulated bottles with a missing or damaged base cap, where a sealing pellet might be exposed.
- Vague claims such as "eco" or "clean" with no material list. Look for named materials for the body, lid and seal.
How do I keep a glass or steel bottle clean?
Rinse daily, and wash with hot soapy water and a bottle brush every few days, paying attention to the lid thread and silicone seal, where residue builds up. Let all parts air dry fully before reassembling. Avoid bleach in steel bottles, which can pit the surface. Replace silicone seals if they crack or smell.
Bottom line
If you want no plastic touching your water, choose a bottle made only of steel, glass and silicone: the Klean Kanteen Reflect for everyday use, the Black+Blum Glass Bottle if you prefer glass, or the Klean Kanteen Rise Reflect for hot drinks. Budget buyers get most of the benefit from the Black+Blum Steel Bottle. Popular insulated brands such as Chilly's and Ocean Bottle are fine steel bottles, but their lids are plastic and they do not say how they seal the vacuum.
Frequently asked questions
Is a glass water bottle better than stainless steel?
+
Neither is clearly better for exposure. Glass is fully inert and never tastes metallic, but it is heavier and can break. Stainless steel is tough, light and can be insulated, and plain water in 18/8 steel is a low-exposure choice. Choose glass for taste and visibility, steel for durability and insulation. In both cases, check what the lid is made of.
Do stainless steel water bottles have lead in them?
+
Some insulated bottles use a small lead-containing pellet to seal the vacuum, under a cap on the outside of the base. It does not touch your drink, but could be exposed if the base cap is damaged. Klean Kanteen states its bottles are lead-free and use a glass plug instead. Single-wall bottles have no vacuum seal at all.
Are Chilly's bottles plastic-free?
+
No. Chilly's bottles have a stainless steel body, but the lid is plastic, which Chilly's describes only as BPA free. Chilly's does not say on its product page which plastic is used or how the vacuum is sealed. If you want no plastic touching your drink, choose a bottle with a steel, bamboo or glass lid.
What does 18/8 stainless steel mean?
+
18/8 steel contains about 18% chromium and 8% nickel, which make it resistant to rust and staining. It is the standard food-grade steel used for bottles and is also called 304 grade. Small amounts of nickel can migrate into acidic liquids, which matters mainly for people with a nickel allergy rather than for plain water.
Can I put hot drinks in a glass water bottle?
+
Borosilicate glass copes with heat better than ordinary glass, but most glass bottles are not insulated and will feel hot to hold. Check the brand's guidance on temperature. For hot drinks on the go, a vacuum-insulated steel bottle with a steel or bamboo cap is a more practical, lower-plastic choice.
How often should I replace a reusable water bottle?
+
A good steel or glass bottle can last many years. Replace it if steel is badly dented on an insulated bottle, the base cap comes off, glass is chipped or cracked, or seals are split or smell after cleaning. Silicone seals are usually sold separately, so you can replace those without buying a new bottle.
